vs Vegeta:

(note that while landing the ship on Namek, Goku mentions he should be able to use a Kaio-ken of 10 times, meaning his full-potential was that of 900,000)

-- Freeza using 50% of his power: 60,000,000

They are the same thing.

Compare to a guitar. When an eletric guitar was created, you changed the name to "acoustic guitar" instead of simply "guitar" so that you can diff easily beetween them.

In the chapter which Goku mentions the Kaio-ken x3 for the first time, he start to call the normal technique "Kaio-ken x2". (later agianst Captain Ginyu he call it simply "Kaio-ken" again).


Or at least this should be the case, since the narrator says: “Vegeta's strength has greatly surpassed what Goku had figured on...! That power was such that not even the Kaio-ken, which doubled Goku's battle power, could give Goku the upper hand... What will you do?! Goku!!"

Since later Dodoria mentioned that Vegeta battle power was "barely 18,000", and by pure mathematic Goku kaio-ken should be at least 16,000 according to the narrator, it is impossible for the "normal Kaio-ken" being something different from Kaio-ken x2.

Unfortunately the goof also found its way into two Daizenshuu entries:

[...]Goku counters with the Kaio-ken, but even that fell short, so he raises its power x2.

Vegeta exhibits strength that Goku can't even scratch, even while using the Kaio-ken. He is certainly the strongest Saiyan warrior.
Vol. 20 / Chp. 229
Goku at last has no choice but to use the Kaio-ken x2. Even with that, he has to dodge with all his might.

Does Toriyama really goofed?

The Daizenshuu clear did. But I can see why they did that. The battle with Vegeta is sort of open for interpretation. It's not the sole mistake made by the Daizenshuu. Still in the battle power section of Daizenshuu 7 it should be clear what the correct thing is.

This is what the manga establishes:

-- Vegeta: 18,000
-- Goku: 8,000
---- Kaio-ken: 16,000
---- Kaio-ken x2: ?
---- Kaio-ken x3: the scouter explodes at 21,000 (going by the Daizenshuu formula it was 24,000)

Going by the narrator's line "not even the Kaio-ken, which doubled Goku's battle power" it is clear what the "regular Kaio-ken" does.
(This was also estabilished in the battle with Ginyu, which Ginyu estimated Goku power was around 85,000 and his "regular Kaio-ken" raised it to 180,000.)

There isn't much room in the manga for anything besides the Kaio-ken x2 being an alternative name for the "regular Kaio-ken". At least Goku using the same technique two times with different names isn't enough to say it's a goof. At least you can say that Toriyama didn't made it clear what was happening.

Well, the highest we see Goku use is the Kaio-ken x20, but he didn't know whether his body could take it, and after doing so, his ki fell a lot.

In filler, Goku once use a move called Super Kaio-ken, a combination between the Full-Power Super Saiyan transformation and the Kaio-ken technique used by Goku while fighting in the Other World Number 1 Tournament against Paikuhan.

Filler aspect aside, I'd assume it would only render it useless while he was dead, SS2 is probably easier on a living body than the Super Kaio-ken would be.
