"Big Green" English Dub Appreciation

Post by violadude » Sun Apr 03, 2011 11:13 pm

I thought we needed an appreciation thread for this often far underrated Dragon ball dub

I mean who could forget such sensical name changes, like Kuririn to Klearin and Muton Roshi to Turtle, and everyone's favorite, Piccolo to Big Green!

Or such logical plot changes, such as everyone except for Piccolo surviving the future battle with the androids. Or Goku killing Lord slug with a sun powered Kamehameha instead of a spirit bomb

Or how about those great voice casting decisions? Casting such as, He-Man as Son Goku, Funi Dub Captain Ginyu as the eternal dragon, Kermit the frog as Tenshinhan! On top of that, these voice actors deliver the lines in such an awesome rushed yet non-chalant fashion that it really brings the characters alive!

Share what your "favorite" thing about the Green Dub of DBZ is.

It sucks less than the Funi dub, at least.

I there any way to acquire these movies if you live in North America? I've only seen them on amazon.uk

Cute.

I do kind of like this dub. It sounds like something you'd hear from Thundercats or He-Man, shows before my time. If they dubbed the series itself, I might check it out. Is it just me, or do a lot of the characters sound the same?

Ohh...I'll be honest, I didn't know you could order from foreign Amazon sites with a domestic account

Which "Funi dub"? Be more specific. FUNimation have been dubbing the series since 1999. I doubt you're referring to their more recent productions.

From the various bits and pieces I've seen from here and there, all of Funi's stuff sounds about equally bad. Horribly miscast roles, poor acting and terrible scripts all over the line.

But that's hardly the topic here, is it?

DBZ bootlegs have the movie 9 cover with the pioneer movie 2 description on the back and the disc actually has a Japanese soap opera in MEPG2.

Hujio just got new recording equipment, but MajinVegitaXV (Corey) is nowhere to be seen.

I'd rather this not become a favorite dub thread, but honestly I like the Funi dub. More specifically, their in-house cast.

My favorite thing is "let that child alone".

I actually like the big green dub, I like to think of it as "It's so bad it's good". Gohan's voice is my favorite of them all.

I believe after his most recent podcast appearance, where he was incredibly drunk, he wandered away after recording and passed out somewhere in New Jersey and has been lost ever since. At least that's what I like to believe. :P

Dubs like this make Dragon Ball the most fun franchise to follow.

I suggest you watch their dub of Dragon Ball Kai. They have improved dramatically in the script department and have recast some of their more incongruous roles.

This holds true for most of their dubbing. Their Dragon Ball dub was good, but child Goku's voice (Nadolny) really put me off. Their dub till the Imperfect Cell saga sucked, but Chris Sabat sucked throughout and still sucks. His voices overlap each other all the time and they all sound forced.

Their Kai dub is decent, but they still have those overly American accents (I'm not saying the accent itself is bad, I'm saying it really doesnt suit the characters). Sabat still sucks. Freeza's va is kickass!

Yeah, me too. The last one was a lot of fun to listen to. :)

I like Gohan's voice from the Big Green dub. Their dub makes Dragon Ball Z seem even more like an 80's show!
