AAAHHHS!!! BIG QUESTION!!!
AAAHHHS!!! BIG QUESTION!!!
Okay, so I KNOW I might have to submit this to the "Ask Vegetto EX" thing, but just in case anyone here knows...
What is Piccolo's speech style? I mean, the real one, before that JERK Kami and Nail thing. What's his style? Like, is it formal, old-style, flowery, blunt, cool, what??? I don't just mean translations, either! I mean in the original Japanese language!!! What style did Akira Toriyama write him with??? I have noticed in the translations that his speech style is different than others, but what is it in Japanese???

Well, I guess I would describe Piccolo's speech as intelligent. Not like Freeza's formality and snootiness, but it's certainly a lot more refined than Gokuu's. Initially, it's also rather villainous and disrespectful, but it starts loosening up slowly after he befriends Gohan, until he rejoins with Kami and that aspect disappears pretty much entirely.
As a side note, Tenshinhan's speech is fairly similar.

Remember, the more exclamation points or question marks you add, your question is more serious and will be answered sooner.

Well, yeah, I think there are still a few "kisama" here and there, but I'm pretty sure they become outnumbered by "omae".kenisu3000 wrote:Corret me if I'm wrong, but I believe even after Piccolo fuses with Kami, he still uses "Kisama" when talking to Goku... and that's quite offensive.
His grammar? Well, there's nothing really unusual about that. The only thing I can think to add onto what I said before is that he uses distinctly male speech.Wahwahwah wrote:Hmmm...yeah, intelligent is right, but I'm talking about actual Japanese grammer. Anyone have anything on that??? (Disrespectful is good!!! *^V^*)
Hhhmmm...yeah, that sounds right. I use more "intelligent" speech too, but it's also more "grammatically correct", if you'd call it that. It's much more-so than others', but with a little casualness.
I was thinking how I use more actually feminine speech, and even though I think in "slang" or even more "male" terms, I still tend to write and speak in more "proper", and I guess "feminine" speech. It's funny how that happens. I just grew up knowing that writing and speaking should be more "proper" and grammatically correct than what is heard on the T.V. or something.
It's funny how you sub-consciously pick up certain things as you're growing up.
Geeze, now I'm talking about grammer and speech-styles!!! Oh, well. I really do love languages, and I'm bound to start going on a tirade about grammer!!! *^C^*

I didn't say masculine speech wasn't proper, I said I use more proper speech, AND I guess I use more feminine speech!!! Can't you read the "and"???
Anyways, I'm weird. I'm actually much less tactful and more blunt than most people, so I'm not exactly polite. I wonder what they'd think of that in Japan? They already think we're really rude, and they're actually right...but not all. Everyone in America isn't a gangster, or a big-breasted, cow-boy-hat-wearin', dumb blonde jock or something.
But, I think my speech would acually be classified as male, as I'm not into all that frilly and polite floweryness, and I wouldn't use the extra words that make Japanese speech polite. I'm not mannerless, but I'm not a flowery-speech type of person. I'm usually really blunt, although I've been TRYING to work on my tact!!!
Yeah, I guess if I was in Japan and learned the language, I would be much more blunt than others, and be "rude" and "male"!!! Hah hah hahs! I can't even IMAGINE ANYONE mistaking ME for a GUY!!!

Hey, one more question on Piccolo's grammer. I don't mean to be breaking the rules, what with my posting on a thread that's been dead for a couple of weeks, but I didn't want to start a new one and no one know what I'm talking about.
Anyways, does he use any slang? Does he have any frivolous and flowery speech? Because, the American first DBZ book, it has Piccolo talking old-englishey, and in the American DB, he has much more normal speech. So, it makes it a lot harder to tell exactly what his speech style is. Oh, and what pronunciations does he use? Different dialects in Japan use slightly different pronunciations of words.
Heh, when I'm trying to say Japanese stuff, I keep wanting to substitute the "T" with a "K" and the "D" with a "G"!!! Like, take the words "Dasenai wa", I keep wanting to say "Gasenai wa"!!! Also, stuff with a "T", like "Taisan", I keep wanting to say "Kaisan"!!!
Anyways, anybody got any info. on my questions???

This topic's OT-ness has been rated as follows:
o_O
Now back to your regularly scheduled topic:
I know that Japanese language mannerisms don't translate well to English, but I feel that they should have relayed it better in the dub. For example, I like how they handled Himura Kenshin's speech in Rurouni Kenshin.

Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!
He talks pretty intelligently, cocky, highly regarding himself. Piccolo also hmph's a lot, all high and mighty-like.
He calls Goku "Son," not "Son-san" or "Goku," which basically means that he has some respect for him for beating him, but not much, and he doesn't consider him close enough to refer to him on a first-name basis. Oh, and he refers to Kami as "old man" (as far as I know; correct me if I'm wrong.)

What's scarier than a DBZ H-game?
