A funny little irony just hit me...

Post by kenisu3000 » Tue Apr 05, 2005 11:26 pm

(Apology in advance: This is for all of us who are absolutely nuts for the original Japanese version of Gohan going SSJ2 at the Cell Games. If you're one of those *cough*-gremlins-*cough* who like the English dub better, please do not be offended. Now, onto my quip...)
I just realized - in the dub, when Gohan screams and transforms, he says something to the effect of "I'm not gonna watch this anymore!!!", right? Well, that's kind of funny if you think about it. I can just imagine the die-hard Japanese-version fans watching this in English, and as their favorite scene is torn to pieces before their very eyes, Gohan belches out the SAME EXACT SENTENCE that is going through these fans' minds. Ironic, huh?
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Why would die-hard Japanese fans be watching the show in English?

Out of sheer masochism, I dunno. I still occasionally watch the dub.

Actually, at the community college I used to attend, some Japanese students I had classes with said they watched the dub on Cartoon Network and had no problem with it. In fact one said it helped him learn English.

Did he start using phrases like "Homeboy, that's done like dinner! KRILLIN'S IN DA HOOUUUUUUSE!"

I am one of the big fans here of the Japanese version, but I just want to say that there are parts to your post Kenisu that are looking like "Fanboy dub bashing" and I don't think that's right. This forum tries not to be like that and I'm sure Mike would agree. Of course you can express your views, goodness knows, I'm always talking about how I feel the Japanese is superior, but I don't bash the people themselves by calling them gremlins and the days of pointing at Funi and laughing are long past. I've seen the dub and the sub and ya, the dub scene isn't as good, but it's not the worst line or moment either in my opinion. I just wanted to say that.

The English version is just as good as the original. XP

But ya, Jers is right. You're starting to sound like a Fanboy. If that's the case the FGH will have to... take care of you. But, before I go, I'll leave you with this. What would have most likely been the Harmony Gold version of that scene had they not stopped dubbing after their pilot? Just think on that for a moment.... scary, no?

That put a horrible taste in my mouth, Xyex...

I could just imagine Gohan being "Son of Zero", and the scene either being cut entirely, or him shouting: "IN THE NAME OF GOD, I CONDEMN THEE!", and becoming horribly religious...

I would love there to be a better dub.

What is really so wrong with the FUNi dub?
You have to remember that they probably did what they(FUNimation) thought best. It was adjusted so that the show would work in the west. Different culture means different reactions to things (mostly. Personally I couldn't care less :P). If you are trying to sell something to a lot of people you will probably try to make it sellable (for want of a better word) to as many as possible.

I for one dont mind cultural translations - but thats not what they did (check out the PS1 Lunar games for that sort of thing), and I still dont like the US background music. The voice actors are (mostly) fine though.

Being Americanized doesn't mean they have to insert silly lines here and there. Look at the Gundam Wing dub, possibly one of the most popular dubs of any series, mostly because they kept true to the original dialogue. In fact, I think funimation would actually sell more if they did this, because then both the casual and hardcore viewer would be interested.

Sorry about that guys. I wasn't trying to start a fight (it took me a while to decide whether or not that "gremlins" line was in good enough taste when I first posted it), but yes, I'll admit to it - I am a crazed fanboy. I hope I didn't offend anyone; it's just that where I live, everyone is completely oblivious to the Japanese version (all they ever watch is the edited English version), and I was dumb enough to try and vent a little on this board.

Don't worry Kenisu, we all have our moments... some of us more than others.

But ya, I do know how annoying that can be. I'm not a very big fan of the Japanese version, a large factor being my prefrence for the English language. But I've still had to point out to people before that the English version was the dub, not the Japanese. XD Plus there's a lot of people who act like the FUNi dub is the worst thing in existence (and bash it more than they do GT...) while it's still the same show, so they annoy me to no end. Hell, I'm glad FUNi got it, cause it could have been a LOT worse.... (reminds everyone of Harmony Gold again)...

Yes, but by that logic it could also have been much, MUCH better. I would love to see what Pioneer would have done with it.

Pioneer didn't dub it, they only distrubted it. So it'd be the same show as it is now.

No, what I meant was if Pioneer dubbed it. They did the Tenchi series, and that was excellent, Ayeka's voice aside. I could be way off but I think they did Gundam Wing, too.

Actually, that was Bandai who did Gundam Wing, along with every other Gundam series. But I don't think Pioneer/Geneon would necessarily have done a great job. I find the dialogue in the Lupin dub to be terrible, for one.

To be honest, I think most of the other companies would have treated Dragon Ball in the same light as something like Pokemon. And I feel like a smaller company like FUNimation was a lot easier to sway into releasing uncut, bilingual DVDs via bitching than a larger company might have been.
