Japanese DVD Release Has the Kikuchi Score - Confirmed
I took a photo of the cover of the new Kai DVD at a nearby store. It clearly lists Shunsuke Kikuchi as the music composer. I haven't got my copy yet, but people on 2ch board are saying that episodes on the all new DVDs really have the entirely-replaced score.

Thanks! I was curious about this, since I know four DVDs are hitting this week.kei17 wrote:I haven't got a copy yet, but took a photo of the cover of the new Kai DVD at a nearby store. It clearly lists Shunsuke Kikuchi as the music composer
As far as I can tell, that means the furthest episode of DragonBall Kai to be released on a home format with its original broadcast score (from Kenji Yamamoto) would be episode 76, which was the last episode on the second "Jinzoningen & Cell" Blu-ray set (released this past February).
This means episodes 77 and onward to the end of the series will likely be released in Japan exclusively with the replacement score of Shunsuke Kikuchi's original BGM, meaning 77-95 will almost certainly never be available for purchase as they were originally seen on Fuji TV -- note that episodes 96 and 97 were originally aired after the debacle went down with the replacement score, so while those two perhaps had music selections from the Yamamoto score done and ready to go, they never aired that way.
Still waiting to find out what's up with FUNimation's "Part Five" of Kai and what score it will have. That one has been pushed back to June (likely due to, again, the musical score debacle), so I would assume that episodes 1-52 (from the first four parts previously released) will be the only ones available in this country with its original broadcast score.
That makes... let's see... episodes 53 to 76 that have been released on a home format with the original broadcast score, but in Japan only. That also leaves a cross-over with episodes 73-76 receiving a home release both with the original broadcast score (Blu-ray set in February 2011), and the replacement score (individual DVDs in May 2011).
Fun times.

It just wouldn't be a Dragonball series release if it didn't have some type of crazy inconsistency.VegettoEX wrote:...

I wonder how this is going to affect sales. Will Japanese fans buy them now...or completely ignore them because of a replaced score? It's such a funny ride.

It would be nice if they changed it from the rush job they seemed to do for the Kai re-runs, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Hmm....I wonder if that means the episodes that were released on Fuji TV with the Yamamoto score--that will subsequently never be released on home video--will become something of a collector's item?
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

How can something that doesn't exist be a collector's item?

I think he means recordings that are of the TV airings.Adamant wrote:How can something that doesn't exist be a collector's item?
"Perfect" is the enemy of the good. True for Cell and true for real life.

I find it hilarious that it's probably American studios that noticed Yamamoto's plagiarism but the Japanese releases are losing Yamamoto's music first... I mean Nicktoons still has his music.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Now, here is a video clip. They are still using released-on-BGM-collection pieces only.

Yeah. The song used for the "I am the Super Saiyan, Son Gokū" scene was seriously mischosen :/

Here's another scene I'm not particularly happy with in the Kikuchi version.

*facepalm*Puto wrote:Here's another scene I'm not particularly happy with in the Kikuchi version.
I don't see why the Dragon Soul instrumental had to be removed. It's just a variation of the theme song (which they're still using), not a rip-off like The Ebb And The Flow, A New Foe Rears His Head, etc, for crying out loud!

The wedding of Goku to Chichi with battle music. Pure awful. Here's another scene I'm not particularly happy with in the Kikuchi version.
Re: Japanese DVD Release Has the Kikuchi Score - Confirmed
Here's a somewhat less terrible one (though still nowhere near as good as the Z scoring for the scene).
