Character question

Post by ruffriles19 » Sat Apr 09, 2005 2:54 pm

I just have a question about the character Yajirobe. The anime doesn't give you any real history on the guy, do the manga or any other source give a background and explain why although he looks fat, he's actually stronger than just about every human on Earth? (as demonstrated during the original series) During original DB, his strength was probably similar or greater than Kuririn or Yamucha.

Also, have people noticed the discrepancy between the way he's subtitled in the original show and in Z. In the original, he's subtitled with normal grammar, but in Z, his subtitles have all sorts of words being cut off with an n and an apostrophe (runnin' doin' etc) as well as using "ain't" (Similar to Chichi's subtitles) Which approach is actually closer to the spirit of the way he talked in Japanese?
I've always thought he was a funny character, albeit underused.

With the exception of episodes 14-28, the entire DB series was subbed by Clyde Mandelin. DBZ was subbed entirely by Steve Simmons. I must say, I prefer Steve's translations, since they're more true to Yajirobe's "redneck" style of speech (for lack of a better term).

And as far as I know, Yajirobe's strength is a mystery. Although I'm pretty sure he just lived alone in the woods or something (similar to Goku after his Granpa died), so I guess you could count that towards at least some of his strength.

Yes, Yajirobe originally talked in more of a "country bumpkin" style like Chi-Chi and Gyu-Mao. Mayumi Tanaka, the VA for him actually used a Kansai dialect when voicing him.

B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

The differences in translations/grammar comes in the difference between translators. Steve does all of DBZ & DBGT, where-as Clyde did all of DB. Steve's probably the bigger fan and has more knowledge about who's-who and why they talk the way they talk, which is why he puts that extra effort into little things like just the way their translations are done :).
