HD Remakes of DBZ Games

Post by mysticboy » Tue Jun 07, 2011 2:08 am

Does any else thinks it would be a great idea for Namco Bandai to hop on the HD Remake bandwagon and re-release Dimps' and Spike's games on PSN and XBL?
It'll give the developers more time to work and make Namdai some cash in the mean time.

Unless... there's red tape from Atari.

They already have done HD remakes.
They were called Burst Limit and Raging Blast.

Okay, jokes aside, I don't really see anyone going out of their way to buy one of the older games in HD when they already essentially have that, give or take a few die-hard fans of the first Budokai games. In fact, I might be tempted to get Budokai 3, but I'm sure I'd be in the minority.

DBZ games don't have the kind of audience to support HD ports of old games to new consoles. It's not a giant game franchise like Metal Gear Solid or Prince of Persia that can pull the kind of numbers to make HD ports make sense, especially considering recent DBZ game sales.

The one thing that might work would be something along the lines of a Super Butoden HD Remix. It would probably appeal to a larger audience, what with the game never having a legal English version. As a lower budget PSN/Live Arcade game, it would also be less risky for Namco Bandai.

Man, I would totally buy the first Budokai in HD. The third Budokai and the Tenkaichi games would be buys if I had extra money.

I would love a BT3 in HD.
BT3 off meds | The final fight

Ah, the Alpha and the Omega. As all life was created from Chaos...so shall it be DESTROYED!!!

The wails of machines | Singing cold harmony | Shifting air upward | Entranced by the breeze | Light pours like blood | Into a cosmic sea | Of stars crystallized | In a frozen symphony

There'd only be red tape from Atari in the US and even then I'm not sure Atari even could.

Would they be awesome? Yes.

Would they probably sell decently well considering their popularity in the states? (ex: Budokai, Tenkaichi series) Probably.

Would they do it? Doubt it.

Super Butoden 2 HD Remix = Love.
Once upon a time everything was lovely. But that was before I had to deal with people.

If Bandai Namco re-released DBZ Legends on PSN and XBLA then it could be awesome. I'm pretty sure that they could re-release Budokai 1-3 in HD for the PS3 due to them having the rights to the games now.

lol

The major issue is that most of the Dragon Ball Z PS2 games are very similar. They could do B3/BT3, and SuperDBZ/IW I guess...

Shadow of the Colossus sold over a million copies, and including Ico makes sense both to give the rerelease more appeal since most people haven't played it and because one game for $40 doesn't make sense in most territories (hence the two HD ports are being bundled together everywhere except Japan). The most recent game in that "series" sold well, so there's an audience for a rerelease, as well as a new audience for Ico that wasn't there before. DBZ games on the other hand used to sell well but haven't for almost five years in a row at this point, so there's not an audience for a DBZ Collection, plus they already make one DBZ game every year, so there's no in-between year they can release an HD Collection like there is for other HD Collections.

I think they should remaster the PSP's Shin Budokai games on the PS3.

They did that when they made Burst Limit.

Budokai would look like this:

It would be a lot sharper though.

The first HD remake/re-release was the God of War Collection which got greenlighted because the developers had a poll asking fans what kind of special item they wanted to go with the release of the third game. It took fifteen weeks to re-code the games and they sold like hotcakes.

I would assume that any other HD remake/re-release would have some kind of theme attached. Whether it be a series from last gen with an overarching plot, or something to go with the newest release in the series or just a large enough fan request.

Anime games in general just aren't popular enough or have enough plot variance to warrant any kind of re-release. It would still be pretty much the same as the yearly releases we already get.

As for just getting the pre-PS2 games on XBLA and the PSN Store, I assume it's the same reason why it's very hard to get many lisenced games on there.

Then I could finally play the damn game!

Would be interesting, with added online I'd could justify a download at the right price, but anime games indeed don't have the audience to merit it, and more importantly, aren't allowed to compete with themselves within their own franchise.

Yes, I'm aware of the God of War Collection and own it myself, but the other new games in the series were also selling like hotcakes, as apposed to the current Dragon Ball games which... aren't. They also don't have overarching plots; they have the same plot over and over again and completely unrelated what-if scenarios.
