For those who strongly prefer the manga

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

For those who strongly prefer the manga

Post by jeffy_2001_2001 » Sun Apr 17, 2005 12:34 am

This is primarily for those who strongly prefer the manga over the anime.
But I suppose it could also be seen as a "the manga vs the anime" post.
-also this is regarding both Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z.

Would you still recommend the anime? (or rather feel the anime still has enough merit despite its dragging and huge amounts of filler)
Is there things you feel that were done better in the anime?

Thank you for your time
-by the way, I am sorry if I have not searched the archives well enough and this has already been discussed in another post

Well, it's always nice to see your favourite sequences with full sound and animation if you ask me.... and the driving lessons episode simply owns. XD

I prefer the manga but thats not to say I don't like the anime.
As far as filler goes, sometimes it may screw up and contradict itself or other aspects, but it is always good to see a good random episode now and again that you can't just pick up and read.

I prefer the manga simply because it makes more sense, with none of the contradictory filler and time sequences. For instance, Son Goku's fight with Freeza was supposed to last around five minutes; in the manga, it could be viewed as a little over five minutes, but in the anime, it took like twenty episodes. That's not to say I wouldn't recommend the anime. The anime is good for any fan, one who is just getting into Dragon Ball, and fans who've liked it for years. It's definately more action-packed, and easier to get surprised (I find myself knowing what happens next through the corner of my eye while reading the manga...). It's also easier to appreciate the artwork while reading the manga. Anime just isn't my thing.

I was first introduced to the anime, so my heart still lies within it's action packed episodes. But recently I've begun to actually read the manga, and really enjoy it, so I would say I enjoy both the anime and manga equally.

Same here, but I prefer the manga over the anime simply because of useless filler & random animation changes from episode to episode.

Anime all the way, baby! However, I am quite nuts over the manga too, and I just wanted to mention that there are a number of tiny nuances that I think were presented better in the manga than the anime. For example, when Kuririn first dies in DragonBall (in the manga), Goku screams at Bulma "Do you have the Dragon Radar?!" and he dashes at Bulma and snatches the Radar from her, and all the while Bulma isn't even paying attention to Goku - her eyes are glazed over, and she's obviously still in shock over Kuririn. In the anime, Bulma watches Goku take the Radar from her. Needless to say, I prefer the manga's portrayal.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Manga. The content. It's all about the content; Freeza's guts for instance.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned art appreciation when I prefer the manga. The original content is there, and it's also more convenient. You can absorb what's going on more easily with the manga.

I prefer the manga not because of the filler that was not present in the stores, but it's significantly cheaper. The graphic novel issues that ViZ releases (the fully uncut ones) are significantly cheaper than purchasing individual DVDs with only 3 to 4 episodes per volume. Not to mention that one graphic novel contains the same equivalent as 7 or 8 episodes without the commercials and the desire to go and get a Coca-cola all the time.

Well for me it's a toss up really. I love manga in general, especially DB of course since it's the original material and contains Toriyama's beautiful artwork. However, the anime is what I saw first, and what made me fall in love with DB in the first place. Also as Pedro said, it's cool to see the characters in colour and moving.^^

Goku's and Vegeta's first Super Saiyan transformations kick so much ass in the anime, I was kinda disappointed by the manga version.

Otherwise, I've really gotten to enjoying the manga more, esp. considering how much cheaper and filler-less it is.

I have a liking for both the anime and manga, but being a dedicated dbz artist, I would copy my pics off of the manga. Some artists on the anime are cra(aaaa)p, I can tell which artist draws which episode (although it's harder to tell on the early episodes due to the different style compared to the newer episodes).

Sometimes the anime shows the same part of the last part of the last episoide(that's a mouthfull), like Gohan goes SSJ2 twice in the Cell saga.

And speaking on the Cell saga, one of the juniors gets it raw in the manga, the first one, gets he's head literally smashed off, I copied this a long time ago off a scan on (dbgt.com I think...) a website, can't find the original, but mines good enough.

The manga rocks, so does the anime, but give Toriyama respect for drawing all these comics with the best storyline of most manga's.

Remember, it's right to left.

Laters.

Is that an eyeball in there? I'd buy the manga, but I don't like some of the censoring Viz has done. (If I'm not mistaken, there was that whole thing about them erasing Android 17's gun)

I think it's a tossup really between the two, because both things have a lot going for them. For me, I just like animation in general, and I especially like the sound effects and BGM in the anime.

That's an easy choice. Graphic images are more appealing to people, most of the time.

They kept in the Cell Jrs' gruesome ends. True the Super Saiyan transformations look better in the anime. That and although a lot of filler was bad, in the anime we got to see Frieza off some of his own men, and how much of a psycho he was.

Ah, another reason why flopped manga is bad; you see flaws in artwork not apparent in the original state.

Yeah, I like the anime for being more action-packed and intense, but I prefer the manga as I'm a real art buff.

The first DB/Z I saw was the anime (at the time I didn't even know what manga was) but after a while I got really into it and heard some people talking about the manga so I gave it a try and love it. Also I have waaay more access to the manga as DBZ isn't shown on T.V anymore here (except on a different T.V package  ).

If you ask me, that's a doujin, not the official manga. >.>;;
