Song Dissections (DBZ Related)

Post by Fionordequester » Tue Jun 28, 2011 4:55 am

Hello, this is a thread by me, as you may know. Anyways, one of the things I've always wanted to do with any show I ever watch and like is to figure out all of the different instruments that are played in the songs, and one day, figure out how they're arranged so that I could use them as examples in any comparisons I'm doing, and maybe even use them as examples to help me compose (something I'd like to do one day, not as a career, but as a hobby). The shows I plan on giving this treatment to are both versions of Dragon Ball Z and Avatar: The Last Airbender, two of my favorite animated shows, both for the reasons listed above, and because I happen to be reviewing both shows (although the nature of the reviews are different. Dragon Ball Z is a version comparison project while the reviews I'm writing for Avatar: The Last Airbender are just traditional reviews, if very longwinded...). I may do the same for Yu Yu Hakusho one day, but I don't happen to be reviewing that show, so, that's not on my list of priorities.

So, I intend to do this both by having this thread open for people to awnser in questions they have knowledge on (Though I am of course aware that Scott Morgan can't help out as far as figuring out the FaulconerProductions score goes, he'd get his butt sued off otherwise), figuring out the instruments by recalling similar instruments I've heard in other songs I liked, and/or by using free music programs to try to reconstruct various songs myself (I'm using Mario Paint right now to try to reconstrust an unreleased FaulconerProductions song used in the very first Episode they were hired for. I may switch to something else if I'm aware of any better programs). Of course, since this is a DBZ forum, I don't suppose the moderators would want me dissecting songs other than Dragon Ball Z related songs, so I'm not entirely sure what to call this thread, but whatever.

If you do, wonderful. If you have any questions, I'll explain them. So, first of all, this intermission theme from Monty Python and the Holy Grail...

I know that what's playing there is an organ of some sort making this really deep HEEEEEEEMMMMM, HMMMMMMMM, HUUUUUUUUMMMMM, HMMMMMMMMMMM sound repeatedly playing without ever changing notes between 0:00-0:13, 0:16-0:24, 0:29-0:38. I know that it's called an organ, but what I don't know is what kind of organ it is, nor do I know what key it's playing in. If anyone could answer this for me, that would be swell.

Thank you so much for the help Scott Morgan! Now, next thing I want to do, I'm thinking of trying to recreate a non-Dragon Ball Z song, get my feet wet before attempting to do those songs for my Episode Comparisons. But, unfortunately, Mario Paint refuses to work on my Apple computer, so, does anyone know any free music programs that will?
