Picture quality in Kai

Post by funrush » Tue Jul 12, 2011 2:44 pm

I was watching Kai on TV the other day and noticed that in the middle of episode 34 there was a sudden jump in picture quality. By quality, I mean the picture and the colors were sharper, it looked really high quality. It stayed like this for a few episodes but around episode 40 it started to return to it's normal quality it has retained since. Can anyone tell me why this occured? I think it'd be fantastic if those episodes stayed that way.

Kei17 stated that it was because Toei had the 35mm negatives for those corresponding Z episodes.

It's 35mm negatives. But, yeah, most people say those corresponding episodes of Z look better as well.

Thought my numbers were sketchy. Corrected.

Yeah, they look better on the Dragon Boxes as well. jjgp1112 once posted some comparisons between the last 35mm episode and the recap from the next episode, and the 35mm episode looked sharper with more vibrant colors.

Yeah, I've done that before too. It's because 32 is the double of 16, which is what type of film stock it's usually shot on.

Yeah, that's probably what threw me off. All I was certain of was that it was in 30-something.

Here it is, for anyone who wants to see:

(It wasn't a recap, btw. It was "replayed" footage at the beginning of the episode. Usually in those cases they reanimate it but for whatever reason they just recycled the footage from the previous episode instead)
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!
