Just wanted to mention something a little funny. A couple of days ago I bought the Mystical Adventure DVD (it had been a long time since I had seen it, and that was the edited dub video), and I thought it was interesting that Daimao found Tao Pai Pai's dub line "He should have watched his tongue - and mine" good enough to add "if not mine" to the end of the Japanese line "Kuchi ni wa ki o tsuketa hou ga yokatta na" ("He should have watched his mouth"). Of course, it's funnier than hell, and I can't say I blame you, Steve! I just love those little quips you add to the translation!

That's Mr. Steven J. Simmons for ya ^_^ . Until I found out who he was and how cool his subtitles were, I ONLY watched the dub on DVDs. Now I watch both dub and sub... but sub, first :p

To make sure I understand your post correctly, you're praising him for taking the liberty of adding in extra dialogue that doesn't exist in the original script? o.o Maybe we have different ideas about what makes a good translator, but I'd be kind of irritated by that.

I don't consider it a "liberty" really. The Japanese dialogue doesn't actually specify whose "mouth" he was referring to, and I imagine the ambiguity of that was meant to be a joke of sorts. I think by adding "if not mine", it adds a similar humor in English, since the ambiguity is impossible to express in proper English. ("He should have watched mouth"? Bleh)

Oh man - I need to get on-the-ball with my lingual studies... the ambiguity of the line hadn't even crossed my mind. So basically, that is what Tao Pai Pai's saying - his mouth/my mouth.

It's funny, I did those translations so long ago, I don't remember doing that. I had to go and check for myself (as EX said, to make sure which track it was on and all). Glad you liked how that was done.

I was watching FullMetal Alchemist on Cartoon Network last night, and I was wondering if it was my eyes playing tricks on me, or did I actually see your name in the credits?

That's helpful, thanks. Gives me all the more reason to get volume 2.

One thing that still puzzles me though, is how FUNimation did it. Seriously... its such a change in quality for them, a quality I don't think they've ever really had in another dub series...

But I am greatful as hell for it.

I thought I read elsewhere on the boards it's because they had Square-Enix breathing down their necks making sure they did a good job with it.

Yeah, because Square-Enix has a history of such great translations that they need to uphold.

Actually just read any review on the North American DVDs of the series. It was praised quite a bit when they were first released.

Actually I've heard praise for most of Funi's other series, and not just Fruits Baskets and FMA. YYH when it was on AS, had great reviews and uncut is great. Although I haven't seen the series, I've heard good things about Blue Gender. And I haven't seen or heard any reviews on Kitty Grade or Tenchi GXP (though I'm still wondering though I haven't seen the series, why Pioneer didn't do that themselves).

Pioneer didnt touch GPX since it doesn't have any of the Tenchi cast. The surprising thing is FUNimation got the continuation of the Tenchi Muyo OVA, called Tenchi Muyo: Rhyo Ohki (supposedly just a random name), and got all of the original voice cast for it, excepting Ryoko, whose original VA said it would be improper to do so. THATS the one that surprises me, why Pioneer/Geneon didn't go for this one.
