My hatred of Dragonball Kai

Post by vegetaslegacy15 » Mon Aug 01, 2011 1:59 pm

Does anyone else despise Dragonball Kai as much as i do?
I don't like the music and I hate the fact that they did not do the scenes over the same way they did the opening.

Also how come they could not get the same voice actors for Gohan and Freeza? That really made me mad.

I'm glad they didn't animate the series with that animation, and I hope they never use it anywhere else.

Lol

It is just when they said it was going to be all new and true to the canon i pictured them doing something no ones every done with DBZ before. Instead they gave us the same exact thing as before except with worse voices for Freeza and Gohan.

I'm pretty sure the general consensus is that the voice replacements for Freeza and Gohan in the Funimation dub are great (Freeza's in particular). At least Gohan doesn't sound like he smokes tobacco on a regular basis now.

I think Frieza's voice is better in Kai and depending on what you're looking for, I think you can go either way with Nadolny or Clinkenbeard. They're both good for Gohan but in different ways. However, the removal of the Yamamoto score has killed whatever interest I had in Kai.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I guess thats true. Its the nostalgia factor that I'm missing I think. I grew up with those voices. But it just feels wrong.

Some of the changes are tough to adjust to, but if they're good, they're welcome. Like the some of the Ginyu Force, for example. Captain Ginyu and especially Jeice had better voices than before. I guess Bulma's is good, too, but my problem is that it's a little too one track and she sounds more like the evil math teacher that's the object of every student's disdain in a show about little kids than what I'd imagine Bulma to sound like.

Have you actually heard what a smoker's voice sounds like?

Thats true they do sound better than before I have to admit. One thing i do sort of like is they took out some of the bad filler. Even though I believe they left the fake Namek filler.

Well you certainly don't have to like the changes in the Kai dub, and I'm certainly not going to belittle you for having an opinion...but be forewarned, you are on a forum that, by far and large, LOVES the changes in the Kai dub.

For why, see my reponse on this thread here.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Yeah, she sounds nasally, yes, but not raspy.

I'm sure plenty of brain donors dislike the accuracy in the script and casting in the English dub of Dragon Ball Kai. Not to mention the horrible lack of electronica-rock garbage.

Kai's dub, trying to do the material justice. How awful.

Throwing in my two cents on why I hate it. There is still a little bit of filler in it. No Buu arc and like others I completely lost interest in it once Yamamoto's music was removed.

The only thing I like about Kai is that it fixed animation errors. If Toei makes the Buu arc and hires a new composer instead of using Kikuchi's music, then maybe I'll start watching the series again.

The only thing putting me off buying FUNimations releases are Gohan and Bulma's new voices. I really don't like them, much preferred the old voices. Freeza's new VA is brilliant though, they made the right decision there. I just hope Ocean do a good dub and someone releases it.

I can't really say I hate Dragon Ball Kai; hate after all is a very strong word. I can go either way with DBZ: DBZ the original for old school feel and the Japanese audio and Kai is for the casual viewing, if I don't want to see filler. As for the new voices, I do prefer them over the original actors. Granted, I like both Japanese and English dubs of Z, however, I felt some voices, especially like Freeza's and younger Gohan sounded off to me. I also prefer Kai's dub over the original Funimation's dub and serves as a replacement for that dub, especially now since it has Kikuchi's score.

I initially had mixed feelings towards Gohan and Frieza's voices, but I've really grown to love Frieza's. Definitely the best voice he's had. Gohan's I can tolerate but I'd still rather have Nadolny's. Dating back to when I was kid and Gohan had easily become my favorite character, his voice always stood out to me, and I have a hard time imagining Gohan without it. I can still deal with Clinkenbeard's voice with no problem though, even if it's not the "real" voice to me. Bulma's new voice, though I just don't like (for her).

Don't get me wrong, Monica Rial is a great actor, but...I just can't get used to her as Bulma.
