On the "Babidi - Rivals" DVD, there is an episode called "The Long Awaited Fight" where Goku and Majin Vegeta fight for pretty much the whole episode...
Any time they throw each other into a cave, the animation changes*. wich would lead me to belive these cave fights where never really inteded to be in the anime but were added later for time, or whatever.
*When I say the animtion changes, I mean the person in charge of animating that one episode. (Some of you would know what I mean just by saying triangle guy)
