Italian Dub of Kai: CONFIRMED......as in it won't happen. :(

Post by TheBlackPaladin » Sat Sep 17, 2011 1:51 am

Being the nerd about foreign dubs that I am, I came across an interesting tidbit on the Italian wikipedia page for "Dragon Ball Kai." Apparently it has been confirmed that no Italian dub will be produced for Kai. Which is somewhat interesting in and of itself, but the more interesting this is why, exactly.

"Il direttore della fascia ragazzi di Italia 1, rete televisiva di Mediaset, ha dichiarato di non essere interessato ad acquistare la serie perché è semplicemente un remake di Dragon Ball Z."

Which, upon being put in Google Translate, gives the following translation:

"The director of the group 1 children Italy, Mediaset television network, said he was not interested in buying the series because it is simply a remake of Dragon Ball Z."

As I understand it, Mediaset was the network that aired DB, DBZ, and DBGT in Italy. And they're not interested in one of the biggest anime names out there because Kai is viewed as a mere "remake." I'm certain many people will agree with that opinion, it's just interesting to me that the network director is being so open about it. Toei doesn't seem to care, nor do a lot of other countries that have already begun their dub of Kai.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

I'm kinda glad in a way. I love the Italian dub, it was actually a big part of my childhood just as much as the original 1996\1997 American dub was. The only difference with the Italian dub was that it was actually good. They even created their own intro song "What's My Destiny: Dragon Ball" which, I think is totally on par with any of the Japanese openings. I'm sure not a lot of people will agree with me on that but hey, that's just how I feel.

I love the DBZK English dub because the DBZ dub just sucked so much. But the Italian DBZ dub was fine and I can understand them not wanting to re-visit it. They could just spend their time and money producing a newer show.

Yeah, the Italian dub was awesome. It had really great and accurate translations such as Vegeta's brother, Radish, being killed by Gohan. Oh, wait...

Still is better than a lot of other international dubs.

I actually heard that the Italian dub of DBZ was one of the few European dubs not based on the French dub, and that it was uncut. Is that true?

Uncut my ass. I've heard from nineko that one DB episode had so much cut out of it that it ended up less than 20 minutes long.

Really? I never heard that. From what I've seen, which is mostly the end of Raditz, training for the Saiyans and a little bit of the Saiyans battle, it seemed uncut.

Your definition of uncut is seriously skewered by what American companies do. Even the French dub didn't do any cuts for the Radits fight or the Saiyan training -- the first cut was iirc during Jiaozi's death against Nappa.

I don't understand Italian, but according to the thing the article actually sources there's absolutely no mention of Kai (via Google Translate), just an off hand remark about why DB is still airing all these years later.

If this is true, I think Wiki, and IMDB should have their URL texts banned here. Too many forum threads taking things anyone can edit seriously (for example, I can edit the English Wikipedia to say YTV will begin broadcast of the Ocean dub of Kai tomorrow following the debut of Dragon Ball Evolution, doesn't mean this is true).
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

I want a translation of that theme song.

Then again, I want a translation of the Arabic theme song too, so we can't all get what we want.

As far as I know Dragon Ball Z's dub is virtually uncut - with the exception of deleted vocal songs (which is Toei's fault) and some minor stuff. The only major edit I recall was in Dragon Ball where Bulma flashes Roshi.

Damn, my hopes of hearing more Dragon Ball techno have been mortally dashed. :(
