I think it was back in 2003, and Akira Toriyama was the guest of honor. I was 13 at the time I met him, Chris Sabat, and Laura Bailey. He answered a group of questions (I got to ask whatever happened to Lunch) and drew Goku flying over the Empire State Building. They had a giveaway for a bunch of DVDs, and the kid who won seemed like he barely knew the show.
Did anyone here get to go? Does anyone have any pictures? After moving over the years, I think I lost all my photographic evidence of going. I managed to appear in the crowd in the Shonen Jump article with my friend and mother.
Shonen Jump Launch Party

I don't know anything about that launch party, but a quick Google Image search came out with these images:

Re: Shonen Jump Launch Party
I was there, as well.
Here's some pics:

There are three distinct things about the event that stand out in my memory:
-When Toriyama was announced and brought out on stage, a good deal of folks didn't even look up from their DBZ card games matches and paid him no mind whatsoever.
-The moderators (Chris Sabat himself I believe) announced that Toriyama preferred if people not take his photo, which unfortunately everyone promptly ignored.
-Some young child got on stage during the question and answer phase, and asked Toriyama an incredibly simple question along the lines of "What are the DragonBall for?" (the child was very young, probably around 5ish, so clearly the child had little understanding or knowledge of the series). Instead of Toriyama answering with a straightforward answer, he went off into a long winded anecdote about how he came up with the idea of the DragonBall based on the Chinese legend and so forth. It was quite amusing as Toriyama's response flew right over the heads of 95% of the audience who seemed to be far more casual or "Americanized" fans of the series.
Toriyama also wasn't there for very long and left as soon as he finished the drawing.

Thanks for the pictures! Ha, I see myself in the crowd in one. I don't remember the guy in the Piccolo costume.
I forgot about him not wanting pictures being taken, I just remember he wouldn't do autographs (which isn't surprising at all). The said kid also won that big prize of Dragon Ball Z DVDs.
