Piccolo Daimao's voice in the (Funi) dub and original.
There are always topics on Goku's voice or Freeza's voice but I never see anything on Piccolo Daimao's voice. So what are your thoughts on his voice for the Japanese version and Funi dub version. IMO His Japanese voice actor did a great job with his slimy (not sure of a better word to use) sounding sinister voice, while Chris Sabat's Piccolo Daimao voice sounded really sadistic and made Piccolo seem a lot more masculine.

I enjoy both voice actors, although I am more partial to Sabat's voice, since that is the first way I heard Piccolo talk. However, things like that that little "YES YES YES I CAN DO THIS mmyes", after fusing with Nail, were just downright embarrassing. However, one of my favorite quotes of DBZ comes from Sabat's Piccolo:
Trunks: "What's for breakfast?"
Piccolo: "Breakfast?!?! You're having the fusion technique for breakfast, that's what!!!

Didn't Chris give '23rd Tenkaichi Budokai' Piccolo and Daimao the same voice?
Anyway, I always found the voice to be too throaty (is that the right word to use?), as if he had some phlegm clogging his throat.

In in my opinion, due to the over-the-top nature of Piccolo Daimao as a character, both voices are very fitting. However, I like the original voice slightly more.

Both voices suit the character. Takeshi Aono's performance actually sounds old but with a sinister tone. Sabat's performance makes the character sound more demonic, if not a bit forced. Luckily by the time they started dubbing DB, FUNi had a better grasp on casting voices.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I love Aono's performance. He really knew how to dial the performance up or down depending upon the scene. His laugh was also incredible. I hope he's recovered from that stroke.
Re: Piccolo Daimao's voice in the (Funi) dub and original.
Well I haven't watched Dragon Ball in Japanese yet so I can't give an opinion on that, but I thought Chris Sabat was great, especially when Piccolo killed the Eternal Dragon. The way he said, "There's one more thing you can do for me." sounded so evil.
Re: Piccolo Daimao's voice in the (Funi) dub and original.
For some reason, Chris Sabat's voice for Piccolo Daimao just grates on my ears. It's probably one of my least favorite voices in FUNimation's dub. It just sounds, I dunno, too scratchy? Kind of hard to explain. I pretty strongly prefer Takeshi Aono's voice because of it.
I think it really has something to do with me reading the manga first in this case. I had a pretty distinct voice in my head for the character long before I started watching the anime in either language. Aono's voice sounded pretty close to what I was imagining while I read the manga, where as Sabat's voice was pretty far off.

I enjoy both voices, with the slight edge going to Sabat.

I like the Japanese a lot. It sounds so evil and fitting, and the French voice's all right as well.
Re: Piccolo Daimao's voice in the (Funi) dub and original.
I dislike Sabat's King Piccolo mainly due to the fact, that it doesn't sound different from his Ma Junior voice, and I've always been of the opinion that they should have different voices, since in my mind it should convey the differences between the two like a 40 year old man contra his 20 year old son.
I haven't heard how the original version's Piccolo sounds like, but the fact that he isn't voiced by the same guy who voiced Ma Junior is definetly a plus.

One thing I don't like is that in Revenge of King Piccolo Sabat made him sound to much like Piccolo Jr does in Kai. While its still a good voice the more over the top voice was more fitting IMO.
Re: Piccolo Daimao's voice in the (Funi) dub and original.
His Japanese voice was nice. I haven't watched the English dub of the Piccolo Daimao arc since its original airing in 2003, but I find pretty much all of Funi's voices grating and doubt Daimao would be any different.

Re: Piccolo Daimao's voice in the (Funi) dub and original.
From what I remember, Sabat's voice displeased me. Then again, I haven't watched Dragon Ball since probably 2004 or so.
That's exactly how it is for me with Tapion. I heard his voice in English and was like "What the fuck!?", then I demanded my friend let me watch it in Japanese. ...Not that there's a comic version I read first. But I still had a voice for him in my head. Thankfully, Toei had the same kind of idea. :>Kiyza wrote:I think it really has something to do with me reading the manga first in this case. I dislike Sabat's voice for both Piccolos and Vegeta, he tries to make them sound too much badass and like "I'LL F@*K YOUR MOM!!!"
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Sabat's Piccolo Daimao sounded way more appropriate than his Ma Junior. His Piccolo didn't stop sucking until Kai.

Mr. Sabat's King Piccolo voice has a more mature and sinister sound to his voice than his Piccolo Jr. Something similar happens in a One Piece filler arc where Vic Mignogna plays a pirate, said pirate as an old man, and his nearly identical grandson. His voices for the young pirate and the grandson are similar but the way they sound is different as one's a bloodthirsty pirate and the other's kind of a spoiled brat. He explains it that way on the dvd commentary as well as attitude can make voices sound different.
Re: Piccolo Daimao's voice in the (Funi) dub and original.
That's kinda the deal with Stephanie Nadolny's Kid Goku, Kid Gohan, and GT Kid Goku, too. Their voices may sound similar but they have a lot of different qualities - Kid Goku sounds really adventurous and quizzical, while Gohan always sounds really nervous at first but then more "neutral" later on. GT Kid Goku is a whole different beast, though. It's almost like Sean Schemmel with a Kid Goku voice filter.Super Sonic wrote:Mr. Sabat's King Piccolo voice has a more mature and sinister sound to his voice than his Piccolo Jr. Something similar happens in a One Piece filler arc where Vic Mignogna plays a pirate, said pirate as an old man, and his nearly identical grandson.
