4Kids (Toonzai) bossing FUNimation around?

Post by SonGoku86 » Sat Nov 12, 2011 10:39 pm

Does anyone know who was responsible for the Toonzai edits? FUNi or 4Kids? If FUNi was in charge of that, IMO it was a stupid move on their part. If 4Kids made that decision, wouldn't that mean that they basically told FUNi, "Look, we want you to do this and that, color Popo blue and call it a day." To me it seems like this was 4Kids' decision, and they ordered FUNi to do it. If it really WAS FUNi, it was a very unusual thing for them to do.

Neither. Higher-ranking executives at the CW, the TV network that the Toonzai version of Kai airs on, ordered the edits. A 4Kids executive said in an interview (before Kai aired on Toonzai) that they would try to just use the Nicktoons-edited version, but that they might be forced to make more edits. The fact that it airs in a time slot that's VERY strict about editing didn't help either.

Even that's kinda crazy, I mean, how many freaking kids even WATCH the CW anyway? Much less 4Kids, since it seems like they've lessened in popularity ever since the later years with them, especially after moving to the CW. I'm willing to bet the same type of edits would've been made if they hadn't joined with the CW and stayed with Fox.

I think Dragon Ball Kai was the highest rated program on the CW4Kids block, so I'd say it's doing well enough. FUNimation certainly isn't being bossed around, considering how much they'd kill for TV air time.

Probably because all of their other shows are reruns.

Incorrect, most of their shows are reruns.

Coincidentally, the original Yu-Gi-Oh is the other ratings grabber.

A lot of people still watch 4Kids. Considering its one of the last Saturday Morning Cartoon blocks, there aren't many options. DBZ Kai is often their highest rated show. Check it out, here are the ratings for November. They are a little disproportionate, as November generally has spikes all across the board in terms of ratings. Mostly because tons of people stay in and watch TV at the beginning of winter. It's called "November Sweeps".
Mohji at Toonzone wrote:Final K6-11 Ratings for Saturday, November 5, 2011 Broadcast Networks only (Live + SD Data):
Source: Disney Research from Nielsen Media Research Data

CW (Toonzai) 0.9/4Avg. (7a-12p)
Magi-Nation 0.3/4; Magi-Nation 0.6/5; Sonic X 0.9/5; Sonic X 1.0/5; Yu-Gi-Oh 0.9/4; Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal 1.1/4; Dragon Ball Z Kai 1.2/5; Dragon Ball Z Kai 1.2/5; Tai Chi Chasers 0.9/4; Yu-Gi-Oh 0.9/4
These ratings come from Nielson Media Research. Which takes a small percentage of American households and places a tracker device on their TV. So a small percentage of houses with TVs represent the entire nation. This, as you might surmise, is an utterly retarded way of collecting data. But these mu'fuckers claimed their stake in the ratings tracking field long before we had better technology for this stuff... but whatever. This is what people go by. There is an estimated 115.9 million television households in the United States. The fractions are shorthanded ways of representing larger numbers. So the 5, in the DBZ Kai ratings represents number of houses with children who watch TV. Therefore, the percentage that is 1.2 devided by 5 (24%) is the same percentage of however many families watch DBZ Kai on Saturday morning. Algebraic.

If I am interpreting this right (if I am not, please someone let me know), 1.2 out of 5 households with the K6-11 demographic watch DBZ Kai on CW. Almost 1/4th of the houses with kids ages 6-11, watching TV on Saturday Mornings, are watching DBZ Kai That's a lot.

Interestingly enough, there is a spike right at DBZ Kai's timeslot. Which means people are purposefully tuning into DBZ Kai. And the ratings do not change from one episode to the other (they play back to back). So whoever are tuning in every morning, are watching both episodes without changing the channel. Then the ratings immediately dip again after DBZ Kai. Which means they change the channel after its over.

I'm not 100% sure what those numbers are supposed to represent without labels, since different places tend to report different sets of numbers. But I do know those numbers aren't fractions.

The first numbers in decimals likely represent the main rating, which is a percentage of all American households with TVs. So 1.2% of all TV households (in the K6-11 demographic?) were watching Kai. The second number could be a few things. Either the share (percentage of people actually watching TV at the time), or the actual number of viewers (in millions). I would assume it's the latter, since I rarely see anyone report shares anymore, so that would mean 5 million viewers. If it is share, then 5% of all kids who had their TV on.

Regardless of what the ratings mean, the important thing to note is that the show with the highest numbers--i.e. the highest number of viewers--is still DBZ Kai. I really hope 4Kids is paying attention to the fact that the highest-rated show was a show that was dubbed very loyally (for the most part, anyway). It should be proof that they don't need to make certain edits in order to make a show popular. I'm not talking about the edits mandated by the CW, I'm talking about edits that they made of their own accord, like replacing their musical scores and almost completely re-writing scripts on occasion.
