What filler would you keep?

Post by penguintruth » Sun Nov 20, 2011 4:40 pm

If you were in charge of what went into DB Kai, what, if any filler, would you have kept in?

Now, naturally, one of the advantages of Kai is lack of filler, though there still is some for continuity sake and probably to fill episode length. But if just a little filler was kept, maybe just a single scene, what would you like it to be?

I would have included the bits with Tenshinhan and Lunch. Definitely the scene where Lunch is at the bar. And probably Yamucha the baseball player. Just a few scenes here and there from the Saiyan arc. And maybe Freeza's flashback to killing King Vegeta, as well, from the Freeza arc.

I certainly would prefer the flashback to King Vegeta to the Ginyu-Bulma switch filler that they kept.

I'm not a big fan of Garlic Jr. but it was an interesting filler which could've been kept even if it was cut to make it act more rapid.

I would of kept some of the filler in the Saiyan Saga.

Like when Gohan woke up to find out he had lost his tail and has new clothes, a sword and etc.

Honestly, I feel as if the Saiyan Saga went by too fast in Kai, especially with the Kamehameha vs Galick Gun scene which I think worked perfectly in the original Z.

Since I am a fan of Lunch I would have kept all of her filler scenes. I loved them all in the Saiyan saga and I was sad to see she wasn't included at all in Kai. I also would have kept some of the filler from the Freeza saga with King Vegeta and maybe even Yamucha playing baseball. I would also have liked to have seen Gohan and the Robot but that filler is way to long just for a couple of short clips.

The driving episode, simply due to the sheer absurdity of it

I know they didn't want to bring the episode count up, but most of the episodic filler is worth keeping. The driving episode, a lot (though maybe not all of) the training before Vegeta and Nappa arrive, etc.

I'd also keep, like most people here, a few of the flashbacks. Ditto the Lunch scenes, to confirm she's at least alive after the transition from Dragon Ball to Z/Kai. And I wish there were a way to keep Marron without keeping in the entire Garlic Jr. arc. Some of the funniest moments in early Dragon Ball Z involve her.

The Bulma-Ginyu bit should absolutely have been cut though. I'm baffled that they chose to keep that, of all things. Was it really too difficult to work around?

Definitely agree with the Launch Stuff. I also think the saiyan saga went a little too fast in Kai. They should have cut less from the fights. I was kind of sad when I didn't see Krillin, Tien, and them fight the ghost or you know the saiyans from the past or whatever.

Since someone brought it up, I'd have to say that there is no real reason to leave in the driving episode. If they did that, it would basically have to just be that same episode. They couldn't edit it at all without including some of the episode before or after, which would make little sense for it, since it is one of the few self contained episodes, which couldn't really flow with the feel of the episodes around it.

My theory is if they wanted a Gohan/Kuririn/Piccolo reaction shot during those specific couple of episodes they were going to need to explain how Bulma got there. Of course they could have painted her out or changed the reasoning as to why she was there but then you get into the whole "effort" thing. To my knowledge Kai never took too much liberty with tinkering around in shots they were going to use.

There was a scene during the Saiyan arc, in which Piccolo put his hand on Gohan's forehead as Gohan was sleeping. I really liked that scene cause it showed Piccolo caring for him, which makes Piccolo jumping in front of Nappa's blast to save Gohan more emotional. So I would've kept that.

Yeah, I sort of missed that scene as well.

The Saiyans, Mightiest Warriors in the Universe, Awaken! Episode 11...

I love this episode because it's the first full length Episode featuring Vegeta and Nappa. Also wanted to see them recolor Vegeta for the entire episode.

I probably would've kept a lot more of the Saiyan stuff:

-Piccolo training Gohan. As it is, in Kai, Piccolo's like... I'm trainin' you! And then suddenly an episode or two later, it's all, hey, you're trained!
-Goku's trip to hell, and maybe Princess Snake. Goku hardly does anything before he gets to Kaiou's; it feels like it took less effort. In the original, the venture down the Serpentine Road feels perilous and dangerous. In Kai it seems easy and just boring.

Think about what they left in Funimation's first edit of DBZ, and trim off a little bit. That's the level of stuff I would've left. :)
My favorite movie henchman is Sancho.

Yeah, looking back at the first dub and some of the filler, more of the training between Gohan and Piccolo would have been nice to build their bond.

I might be wrong here, but I kinda remember them keeping most of the extra scenes with these two but instead of having them scattered across several episodes, they put them all together into one.

What I wish they would have kept is Gohan trying to get home and deciding against it.

That's one of my favorite scenes. Especially when he runs into Piccolo and restates his goal.

About the Saiyan arc filler I'm confused... like if I watch Z I feel it is too long... but then if I watch Kai it's too damn fast... I think I'd rather watch Kai, but whatever.

And, yeap. For whatever reason I love the filler before the Cell Games!

The episode where Yamcha, Krillin, Ten and Chiaotzu go in the room "of Spirit and Time" or whatever it was, where they travelled back in time to Planet Vegeta. I thought it was visually brilliant and it was interesting to see how they mentally prepared for the battle with the real saiyans. I love that filler so much!
