World's Strongest Review-Ocean Group Dub
Hey guys I would like to give you a review on the DBZ film The Worl'ds Strongest(Ocean Dub).
Part 1
The film starts of with Gohan and Oolong travelling to the Tsumisumbri Mountains to collect the Dragon Balls. They notice how the Dragon Radar has the Dragon Balls quickly gathered at one spot. Piccolo blasts the cold ice of the Tsumisumbri mountains but to no avail. Meanwhile a scientist by the name of Dr Kochin asks Shenron to free his mentors from the seemingly unbreakble ice. Shenron grants said wish and leaves. After this, Gohan and Oolong are ambushed by some weird Saibaiman looking creatures but Piccolo appears and easily beats them.
However, a red light beams on Piccolo and he is knocked out. Chi-Chi and Goku seems to discuss how Gohan is behaving lately. Gohan is seen to be studying, but then has a weird fantasy. The scene is a song known as Piccolo-san Daisuki and the song is about Gohan and Piccolo obviously. Oolong is given a punishment for sneaking of with the Dragon Radar. He has to cook. Then the Saibaiman guys request for Master Roshi who defeats them very easily much to the pleasure of Dr Kochin.
Dr Kochin wants to take Roshi back to his lab as he believes he is the strongest in the world and he even goes as far as to kidnapping Bulma to make him come. Kochin then test Roshi's skill against the Bio-Warriors. They are Misokatsun, Kishime, Ebifurya. Roshi seems to hold his own against them, but is eventually defeated and is taking hold by Kochin. Bulma then scolds the Dr for what he did to an old man. They explain the reason of their actions. How the world viewed them. And Dr Wheelo's plans. Bulma tells them Roshi was the strongest a long time ago but the strongest now, is known other then Goku.

Review Part 2
Goku heads of to find Bulma and Roshi thanks to along and Gohan manages to follow along by sneaking past Chi-Chi. Goku head to the icy lab but is approached by Misokatsun. He then has a fight with him and eventually wins by using the Kaio-Ken. Then Goku fights Ebifurya and Kishime but is frozen by Ebifurya's Toketsu-ken(Freezing fist). Before Ebifurya can finish Goku off, Krillin and Gohan manages to come to the rescue, but the are quickly defeated and end up frozen as well. Goku uses the Kaio-ken to break out of the ice and defeats the remaining Bio-Warriors. A few moments later we see Piccolo but, he has yellow wires on his head and is acting strange. He even hits Gohan. Piccolo and Goku have a little fight and Gohan says to Kochin that it's all his fault that Piccolo is like this.
Kochin provokes Gohan and the boy eventually uses his hidden powers in a fit of rage and even manages to deflect Kochin's ray blast. Gohan's fit of anger even breaks the mid control device on Piccolo's head. Kochin attempts to shoot Krillin and Bulma but, if defeated by Roshi. Wheelo then appears and if pleased with what he sees. He says Goku would make a fine body(I should have mentioned this before) but Goku obviously doesn't want his body to be not his. Then the Z-Fighters, start to fight Wheelo but to no avail. Goku manages to use the Nyoi-bo and then the Kaio-ken X3 to greatly damage Wheelo. Then Wheelo decides to charge a blast and Goku uses the Kaio-kem X3 Kamehameha to counterstrike. Wheelo's blast seems to be stronger but, Goku uses the Kaio-ken X4 Kamehameha to send Wheelo flying. But it's not over. Wheelo is still alive. Goku realizes that only the Genki Dama can beat Wheelo.
While gathering energy the other fighters mainly Gohan and Piccolo stall Wheelo and manage to inflict huge damage on him. Krillin gets slapped.
Goku fires the Genki Dama at where the others are and the bounce it at Wheelo and finish him off for good. Finally the end shows the world at peace. Roshi says that Wheelo had one good point. He fought he was the strongest in the world. Bulma says he's really just a dirty old man. They all laugh and the ending song and film end. NOTE: Kochin died when Wheelo came out. He's a robot.

Re: World's Strongest Review-Ocean Group Dub
Review
Pros
The voice acting was very good. When you have Saffron Henderson as Gohan, Peter Kelamis as Goku, Scott McNeil as Piccolo the film's going to be a hit no matter what. Some voices like Roshi's were decent but not great. Terry Klassen also does a great Krillin. His voice is high pitched and all but that's how Krillin is in Japanese as well. I bet Mayumi Tanaka would agree with me as well! The villians also had appropriate voices as well
The script is basically Toei's script cut and paste in the Movie with changes so damn slight it doesn't matter. The voices are so good it doesn't really matter if there's differences
The Japanese score is intact to the point where Head Cha-La and Pikkoro-san Daisuki are left in Japanese.
Kaio-ken is pronounced correctly. I don't mind Kayo-ken but having it pronounced the way it's supposed to is awesome.
Cons
Those stupid sound effects from the main cartoon are still intact. It gets rid of the sound effects originally there and for me that's a problem. For example in the Japanese version when Kishime whips Krillin and Gohan the sounds there's no added crackles or shit. But in the Ocean version the crackles are present so much that it overrides the pure sound of things.
That's it.
Overall score 8.75/10
If you care for accuracy(not that accuracy makes something good IMO) and want a DBZ film in English with decent voice acting then this is what I recommend.

Why didn't you just put them all in one post? If you finished one part and were working on the other parts, why not wait until everything is done to post them?UnbiasedDBZfan wrote:Wait! It's more of an overview. I'll review the next part later!Rory wrote:This isn't a review.
I do think accuracy does make something good. Actually, that's how I'll usually judge if an anime dub is good or not. For example, I love the original Ocean cast from the 1997 DBZ dub but, the TV series was totally inaccurate. I can't recommend this version to anyone or even watch this version and seriously think I'm getting the same show that aired on Japanese television. If I do watch this, it's for nostalgia.UnbiasedDBZfan wrote:If you care for accuracy(not that accuracy makes something good IMO) and want a DBZ film in English with decent voice acting then this is what I recommend.
On the other hand, I wasn't too crazy about the FUNimation voices that replaced Ocean years ago. But now that I've seen how DBZK was dubbed, I really enjoyed it. I may not be in love with the voices but, it's probably the most accurate DBZ dub we'll get here in the US. I have no problem recommending this to people. I can watch this in English and enjoy it knowing it's pretty close to the original material.
Re: World's Strongest Review-Ocean Group Dub
I think pretty much everybody is familiar with the Ocean dub of the first three movies.
Re: World's Strongest Review-Ocean Group Dub
Ehhhh, I can't agree. There are dubs which have extremely literal, stilted translations that are honestly nigh unlistenable vs. ones which might not have the best translations but the acting is far better. Mind you, I'm not saying that you can't do an accurate dub that's also localized well (see: Cowboy Bebop), but there are times where things get dubbed that sound nothing like the way people actually talk in English.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:I do think accuracy does make something good. I think a big example of this is the Manga dub of Castle of Cagliolstro vs. the Streamline dub. The manga version is probably more 'accurate,' but the acting and voicework don't compare to the original and the PG-13 level language doesn't do anything to help the movie. (I say this with no disrespect to David Hayter, who I love in Metal Gear like you don't know.)
To me, if I'm watching a show, and I get so into it I totally forget that it's dubbed, and there's nothing in there that obviously takes away from the experience... that's what a good dub is to me.

Re: World's Strongest Review-Ocean Group Dub
A good dub is two things: Accurate and well-acted. Any dub that lacks either of these two elements cannot be called good, as far as I'm concerned. Now, that doesn't automatically make it a terrible dub, if it lacks one or the other, but if it lacks both, it tends to be horrible.
I always hear people say, "Well, if the dub is too accurate, it will sound wrong." Really? Name a few dubs that are TOO accurate. I think that's a load of apologetic shit for people who want to enjoy crappy dubs.
I can forgive a few flourishes here and there when a studio makes a dub, but I don't think dub studios should have too much "creative" input. I'm not interested in how Funimation or Bang Zoom think the lines should go. Who are they to have input? They didn't write the show(s). It's not their job to recreate the script. It's their job to fit the lines in English as well as they can to the mouth flaps. I don't want a bunch of bullshit that some asshole writer at 4Kids thinks is clever. Make your own cartoon if you want to do that. You didn't create the show, you shouldn't be trying to create one.
The Ocean dubs of the first three DBZ movies are fairly (but not entirely) accurate and respectably acted. It's why when I watch those movies I tend to watch them dubbed (I have the Pioneer DVDs of them). I especially enjoy Peter Kelamis and Scott McNeil in them.

Blue Water dubs have horrible voice acting, so it hardly matters whether they're accurate or not.
Just save one of my charts and fill it in differently. It's not difficult.

Shonen dialogue is really awkward and stilted, I have to imagine people are fingering the dub as the issue as opposed to the original script.penguintruth wrote:

That being said sometimes those complaints can hold weight. Having things like two siblings calling each other "brother" and "sister" in a dub can be jarring. Or of course when dubs leave in a ton of needless, easily translatable Japanese termonology.
The bizarre thing to me is those people turning around and thinking the dub Z dialogue is "more natural" sounding. That's a little baffling.
