FUNimation went out of business.

Would Canada gain sole responsibility for English language distribution?

If FUNi went out, I'm fairly sure that it'd be because Dragon Ball had no more financial viability in North America. FUNimation uses the franchise as a means of almost guaranteed profit and uses that to fund other projects to stay afloat, so the only reason they'd go out is if DB didn't sell anymore.

I'm curious what would happen with the video games outside of Japan. Will they use the FUNi voices? Will they use the dub names or the original names?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Nope, they actually won their case. I don't remember how, exactly.

Pretty much.

It would be interesting to see if anyone else would pick up the rights. If Funi did go under, than the English cast wouldn't be contractually obligated (Assuming they are now).

I'd like to see Bandai have the rights for good old Dragon Ball. Since Bandai hire voice actors, rather then use their own, we'd see a 3rd Ocean dub likely.

I doubt Bandai would pick up Dragon Ball.

I would imagine that other compaines would try to grab the rights to the series before the US rights go back to Toei. I personally see Viz trying to grab the rights to Dragon Ball seeing that they are already release the Manga in the US before.

I doubt it, the BR's "hold" doesn't indicate that.

Fuck Bandai!! I want Pioneer to regain the rights for DBZ. But this time, all of it!! And they should hire Ocean. And record it in Canada. And Cancon will kick in. And DBZ will be Canadian again!!

How would that be possible? Pioneer became Geneon, and then Geneon stopped producing and distributing DVDs.

What about Viz? I can't think anyone else other then them that could take over the rights to Dragon Ball if FUNimation somehow ends losing the rights to Dragon Ball.
