Hello everybody. I'm new here and I would like your advice.

Ok, so my tax return is coming soon and I think it would be nice to own the entire dragonball collection. I'm not much of a collector and I'm not a manga/anime fanatic, but I do love Dragon Ball, I grew up watching it and more than anything else I watched on TV it stayed with me in a big, big way. I watched the spanish dub first and I like it more than the english dub, but finding that is not gonna happen, besides the japanese version with subs is perfect.

I already bought the Viz Vizbigs manga, I'm aware of its shortcomings, nevertheless I'm enjoying them. I've never read manga or comic books before but I am actually enjoying the manga better than the anime (I doubt this would have happened when I was a kid hehe). I also have three Kanzenbans brought to me by a friend that traveled to Japan (this sparked my interest to own the entire thing).

Anyway, now for the anime, I am planning on ordering all of the available dragon boxes, the blue bricks, the green bricks and the movie packs. I'm guessing that my only choice is to complete the collection with some orange bricks, it seems that the episodes overlap with the boxes and that's hurting me. There's no alternative right?

Also, I would have to add the history of bardock and trunks special too? I'm gonna check again to see if they come included in any of the movie packs, don't think so.

Anyway if anyone can offer any advice, or just wants to make a comment, please do :)

I'd honestly wait on collecting the series until we have a concrete, consistent method. Unfortunately, the season set that covers Dragon Box 2 is the worst in quality - which probably adds to why it's so rare. I'm sure someone will come in with hordes of screenshots.

That said, if you wish to do this anyway I wish you success.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Depending on how much you are willing to spend, there is a member selling their entire Dragon Box set for $560... at least then you wouldn't have to worry about bad quality and overlapping.

For Dragon Box 4 you could try to collect the singles as opposed to the orange bricks if you're bothered by the cropping. They wouldn't be expensive if you ordered them used during a free shipping sale at GoHastings.com. You could also get Ultimate Uncuts/the Blu Ray levels for most of Dragon Box 1, and some singles for the latter part of Dragon Box 2, though there's no real affordable alternative to the episodes in between besides watching eBay/Amazon and hoping you get lucky.

I was gonna recommend the same.

To add to that, there's a DVD guide on this very that site you can you keep track of which single DVDs you need to buy.

I thought I had posted a reply but I don't see it, must have clicked on the wrong button.

Anyway, thank you for the responses. One poster suggested to wait and I have thought about this but I'm worried about future availability, bricks would be better than nothing at all. I doubt Funi would stop producing dragonball related products though so waiting could pay off.

As for buying the singles, yes I've thought about it, haven't checked the availability yet though. Are the subtitles the same as the DB BOX?

Yes they are, though I think the two "Ginyu" DVDs use dub names in the subtitles, but after that it's exactly the same.

Welcome to Daizenshuu EX :) I'm personally waiting for the Original Dragonball Dragon-Box. I don't want to buy the Blue Season Sets unless I haft too. I hate to say wait and not buy anything. But if you hate cropped 16x9 footage and animation getting deleted off the screen, well that's the Orange bricks. Dragonball Z Dragon-Boxes are going out of print. So I would say buy what you can of those. and now the Blu-rays are canceled. But the Remastered movies aren't bad. at-least I don't think they are. Looks like it's mix and match lol unless you just wanna buy all of the Orange Bricks.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

-For Dragonball, while they're not as good as the Dragonboxes, the blue bricks are good quality for the price. The whole series, consistent release, 65 bucks. I don't regret buying them at all.

-For Z, your best bet is the Dragonboxes, hands down. Gonna be a pretty penny, though, but well worth it. The first two Blurays are also amazingly good too, if you don't mind that there's only 2 of them and that they're missing the next ep previews.

-DBGT sort of falters. You can either buy the singles which have better colors and detail, but more macroblocking in action scenes, or you can get the super smoothed out season set which is... ok but way over saturated IMHO. The season set is easiest if you're just trying to get it all to watch in a chunk, and don't want to worry about tracking down all 100 million singles. If I had a choice, I'd get the singles even if they're macroblocked a bit.

Thank you :). Why exactly do were they cropped, do you know this?

Also is there an "artist guide" for the show or comparisons? I remember seeing huge differences in the drawings.

When Funimation decided to do their own ''Remastering'' they cropped the top and bottom images to make a 16x9 aspect ratio. So the tops and bottoms of characters were cut off.
Also you will get stuff like this in the Orange Bricks
They over-saturated the Image so bad characters seemed bleached out
Image
as you can see lines of animation gets deleted when shaking scenes occur

It is worth saying that in the later seasons you don't get that as much, but it does occur.

Christ, that looks terrible haha. And what was Funi thinking, just cutting off huge chunks from the top and bottom...

Well I know what they were thinking, that people would say "widescreen!". Still though, such a bad decision.

Also I'm sorry If I may have derailed your thread here. I just wanted you to know the problems of the Orange Bricks. That way you know what you're getting into :)

Oh, btw, the only real negative about the Dragonboxes is that there is some color loss in the blues and reds, and as such it looks very bizarre in certain places.

The audio is about as good as it can be, unfortunately.

Thanks for all the info guys, I'm gonna think about it. So far the entire collection will cost me 393, not including the episodes from the unavailable dragon boxes. I'm gonna go to bed, I'm too hyped right now and just wanted to click on "confirm order" or whatever button amazon has, but I don't want to buy on impulse.

I may have missed something, but out of curiosity, what exactly are you ordering for Z? Are you going the get whatever Dragon Box route, and then fill the rest with orange bricks, or are you also tossing in some singles in there for Dragon Box 4/end of Dragon Box 2?

Well the person selling them new for 560 I think is me(unless its someone else) and I would probably go down to 525$ shipped if you really want them since I am on daizex. I don't think there is a better deal on all of them so its up to you that's the lowest I'll go on them and I'd feel uneasy seeing how much most sealed ones go but I MUST NOT BE GREEDY! Also this applies if you live in the United States I didn't even realize to ask.

Just some advice... Don't buy any of the Orange Bricks. Especially the second one.
I have a Dragon Ball collection of sorts which can be seen here.

It is still too much for me. Don't get me wrong, I think your price is great, a million times better than others, I'm sure you will eventually sell it at that price.

Yeah I will (already had offers at this price) but I posted it on here cheaper than listed because it is from one fan on here to another. If its too high for you that's okay I tried
