Dragon Box # Rarity

Post by jukteen » Sat Mar 03, 2012 5:41 pm

Hello! New member here to the forums, just wanted to make a thread and keep up to date on how close each box is to OOS. I purchased box 2 recently at a local store because I heard that ones out of print, I don't have a whole lot of money to spend but I do plan on buying all 7 boxes eventually. I want to buy it just before they go OOS that way it gives me some time to save up some money. I just started researching about these boxes so correct me if I'm wrong.

Dragon Box #1 - Still available
Dragon Box #2 - Not avaiable
Dragon Box #3 - Still available
Dragon Box #4 - Limited stock
Dragon Box #5 - Still available
Dragon Box #6 - Still available
Dragon Box #7 - Still available

I hope to keep this thread up to date so I know when exactly I need to go out and hunt down the box. Been a fan of Dragonball for as long as I can remember, found out about this forum recently and I'm glad I can be part of this community. Also can't wait til they release dragon boxes for Dragonball, Dragonball GT, and the movies!! Dragonball GT is awesome I don't know why a lot of people hate it on it lol.

Every dragon box can be purchased on Amazon, you'll just be spending $100 on boxes 1 and 2.

Where do you see that? I checked both amazon.com and .ca, DBox 1 seems to be available but DBox 2 is out of stock and people are selling it for like $200+

Check eBay too.

I don't necessarily think the FUNi Dragon Boxes Z are worth so much but people have seem to go crazy over it, yes they're awesome but the prices are insane (some of them).

If I'd sell my boxes it'd be for rather decent prices but I won't because I've finally got the entire Z series. :)

Yeah I checked ebay, actually DBox #4 seems to be even more expensive than #2.. has that been OOS too?

Let me be the first to say ''Welcome to forum!'' :) Good luck on getting all your Dragon-Boxes

Haha thanks :D

So I was just going through box 2 making sure all the DVDs work before I decide to toss the receipt, I skimmed through each disc and noticed that the picture isn't "perfect" like how people say it is. I noticed some shaking as I'm watching some scenes, is this normal? I thought the dragon boxes eliminated all the jittering?

Also, while I was going through each disc I noticed a couple of them have scratches, and 1 disc having quite a bit of scratches, aren't DVDs suppose to come in mint condition? Has anyone else noticed scratches on theirs when they first opened the box? The discs all play with no problems despite the scratches but it still bothers me.. thinking if I should go back to the store and refund it, but I got a feeling they'll probably say if it plays then there's no problem and won't refund it because of scratches?

What store did you get it from? usually you don't need a receipt for an exchange if you got it from walmart. I've bought DVD's from there and didn't have a receipt and they let me exchange it for the same thing, But what's the chances of there being another Dragon-box 2 there? But I bought box 1 and 6 and they didn't have any scratches on it.

The picture quality is fantastic, the same can't be said for the animation.

I bought all Dragon Boxes Z brand new sealed and some (very very few) came with light marks/scratches, I guess FUNimation was doing this on a rush. :?

With Blu-ray the scratch resistant is more durable and sort of harder to scratch (unless you're doing it on purpose).

I've been slowly picking up the Dragon Boxes and luckily I have all the hard to get ones. But, I have no supplemental income now that I lost my job. I hope I can get back to where I can pick the last three up before they become hard to get. Course, Dragon Boxes of the original series would be a priority. I'll FIND a way to get those. Even if I have to sell off old releases.

The video quality is by no means "perfect," as much as "as good as it's ever going to be, ignoring the possibility of a brand new 1080p film transfer based on the same masters using 2012 restoration/remastering technology, including some minor color correction." There is some frame jitter (especially noticeable during the eyecatches), and some of the colors are faded from how they looked back when DBZ originally aired on Japanese television in the 80s and 90s.

As far as disc damage goes, yes, when I ordered Dragon Box 4 from Amazon back in September 2010, my copy of Disc 20 was defective so that playback froze at a specific timecode the FIRST time I ever watched it. Unfortunately, I never tried exchanging it when I had the chance, so I'm probably screwed now. Other than that, I haven't had any issues with receiving damaged discs or boxes.

Unfortunately this is the last one, and no other store has it in stock :(

It seems I got "picture quality" and "animation" mixed up, I'm not sure what the difference is but basically, when it shows a scene where someone is talking and nothing is moving except his mouth, I notice the background shifting a little, none of this is noticeable during fight of course. No problems with the colour as far as I can tell but the shaking just makes it look like I'm watching a really really old film, you know the black and white ones back in the day? LOL that's what it reminds me of.

It's unfortunate that FUNimation didn't print them properly and have them all checked, 4/6 of my discs have scratches, 3 have minor ones but 1 has some serious ones.. I hope it doesn't freeze or anything.

A slight amount of frame jitter is, well, a consequence of hand-drawn, photographed animation. Each cell would have to be placed on a sheet to be photographed, in succession. The jitter comes from the slightest bit of human error in making sure that each frame is in the same place as the previous one. They're professionals who do a good job, but, hey, no one's perfect. Can't really blame the DBoxes for it. That's just how the show is.

I see.. alright that's fine then I was just worried that the scratches was causing the jitter, but if it's suppose to be like that then it's all good.

How do you guys keep track of each boxes availablity? Whether it is still in production or not? Is it by simply visiting Amazon/eBay and seeing what the price is? Higher the prices are = More rare that box is to be found at retailers? I'm just trying to buy them just before they become extinct, not in a rush to get them because I'm getting these for collectible purposes, I've already seen the whole series.

That's not Funimation fault, but fault of those people in post office who are probably playing football with it.
My imports are always beaten like hell.
FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat: Funky_Strudel
PS5: Dynamixx88
Trust me, I'm millenial and a designer.

The boxes on the outside look 5*, just a couple of discs have small light marks.

My Pinocchio DVD from the Blu-ray Combo came with few scratches so it's probably due to the employees who were packing it.

Yeah, 1, 2, and 4 are really hard-to-find and expensive.

I think 2's rarity has to do with the abysmal (even by orange brick standards) Season Two brick.

Three's also getting up there, as well.

Personally, I'd wait for further news on future Dragon Box releases, as I'm holding out hope that there'll be a Blu-ray set released, but that's very doubtful.

But, at the same time, I'd totally go ahead and buy them DVD boxes if I had a job at the moment, but I'm not planning on getting one until I get out of High School this June.

I have a strong feeling they probably won't, I mean that's basically what the level 1.x were, but they scrapped that because it was difficult to do.

There's a survey that's going on right now about which dragon box they should release next, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball GT, or the movies. So if there will be new dragon box releases, it'll definately be for one of the other series.

If you're willing to spend the money, I'd pick up 1, 2 and 4 asap, as I don't see them being released again anytime soon, if ever, and they''ll be gone for good once the few that are out there vanish. The few still available (1, 2, and 4) now are probably your only chance of getting them new unless FUNi decides to care about the fans who missed out on these. Picking them up used is always an option by some caring DBZ fans who are willing to part with theirs for whatever reason. I had to have new so I paid a lot for my Box 2, but it was worth it to me. It may not need to be new for you, so settling on a used one in good shape would probably be your best bet.

If FUNi does release more, it's doubtful they will release more Z boxes, and instead do the movies or the original DragonBall.
