Request: More Lenience for Non-DB Toriyama Related Material

Post by Innagadadavida » Mon Mar 05, 2012 3:05 am

I've seen a few threads get closed here and there since because they were not Dragon Ball related, but Toriyama related instead. Now, I understand the strict on-topic policy we have here and I appreciate it too. But I would like to request that when a non-Dragon Ball related topic comes up that is about Toriyama or his other work, we let it slide every now and then. Similar to the SOPA thread we had a while ago in General Discussion. Here is why:

1) There is no other place on the web with as large of a following for Toriyama
As Dragon Ball super fans, of course we talk about the creator. We have shared and learned a lot about the man and many members respect and admire him. I challenge you to find another place on the Internet where the community would have as passionate discussion about his work. Sure, most moderately involved anime fans are aware of him. But you won't get as many opinions and discussion topics about his work from your average anime forum as you would here. So it's a shame when a topic comes up about Toriyama/Dr. Slump/or his other works, that have no tentative relation to Dragon Ball, gets closed.

2) The influences before and after are always relevant, even if not directly addressed
We can still learn and understand Dragon Ball better even when not directly discussing it because of the influence. Talking about the manga that came before Dragon Ball can inform the readers and open our eyes to an aspect about Toriyama or his style that we may not have noticed when just discussing strictly Dragon Ball. And it would be equally interesting to be seeing the influence Dragon Ball had on his later work.

I had more but I forgot to write them down. I may edit them in later. I had the idea to bring this up when that thread came up with all the pictures from some of his unreleased manga. I think that thread got deleted because it linked to scanlations, but there have been some that didn't have illegal links that got closed because of the topic. Herms has had a thread that was about Toriyama I think. But that was the only one I can remember. Anyway, I'd like to see what other members think and of course, the administrators as well. I don't have anything in mind to post at the moment, but I would live to see more material covered in the future. Obviously not all threads. We don't want the general discussion littered with Dr. Slump questions. But a few every now and then that are about Toriyama or his other manga would be fun and interesting.

Holy shit, I was going to request this last night, but I forgot to do it!
What I believe that would be best is to create a category for Toriyama's other works, so that it won't mix with the Dragon Ball threads.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

To be fair, the most recent thread on the subject that was closed was basically just "here's a bunch of bootlegged material with no real discussion".

I'd say we're pretty darn lenient when it comes to that stuff already. So long as there's even the most remotely, tangentially-related connection to Dragon Ball, we really have no problem allowing it. Character designs, story plot points, proto-works, author motivations... all that stuff is already totally kosher, and I'd love to see more of it.

If there's something I/we are missing and inadvertently closed off, our bad -- just let us know.

At the end of the day, though, one of the things that allows us to continue as what we are is by keeping things as focused as they can be, and there are currently no plans to branch outward beyond that.

My real intentions for that thread was to be the main feed for the Google spiders. By that, I mean that if someone would be Googling and searching AT's other works (though not necessarily worded as "Akira Toriyama's other works"), it would lead to this forum, and that thread. Making it a centralized search reference for whomever wishes to view AT's other works (that are not mainstream such as Dr. Slump or Sand Lands or even Cowa). In which, not only would many searchers be indirectly introduced to Daizenshuu EX, but to ease the hassle of having to Google for all those works. I swear, I kid you not, searching for those images that I found was not easy. Typing in the name of the manga and then Googling it just doesn't cut.

My point is that I only wanted that thread I made to be the central search reference for everyone that would look for AT's other mangas. Most of which, aren't even available in mangafox.com.

But it was a failed effort to begin with anyways. As there is no spoiler tag, loading that one page would be over 200MB or so worth of images in full resolution. I could have made a smaller thumbnail to link to the full resolution images but I have a lazy side.

I could have posted it in Neoseeker, where I came from before this forum, but there's little love for AT's other works there, aside from Dr. Slump and Sand Lands... and again my lazy side to repost it there... even though they have spoiler tags. lol
