...do you discuss Dragon Ball the way you do here, out in the real world?
One of my two best friends recently texted me his theory on how saiyans achieve super saiyan. It was a discussion on emotions vs. training, and what it took to become super saiyan. I also recently met this cute chick at my work who is a big fan of Dragon Ball Z, and is currently buying and watching Kai on home DVD. I'm trying to convince her to watch the superior Japanese version.
I know a lot of us here joined this forum to discuss this awesome series. We all have friends who may or may not be into this as much as we are, so I'm just curious, who here discuses Dragon Ball here and only here, and who has real life friends who you watch and debate Dragon Ball with?

I discuss it primarily with my older sister. I've met fewer than 5 people in my life that I can discuss the series with in-depth. I got back into the show after over half a decade and I got my sister back into it. I'm the one that does most of the viewing and active background reading, but she's just as interested in some of the character info and stuff. Besides her, I'm out, which is why I joined this board.
edit: sans the anime clubs I've attended once or twice. Those were mostly dub infatuation and surface-level discussion (who would beat who in a fight? type talk, etc.).

IRL? Never.
There's barely anyone who would want to talk about such things where I live. Sometimes I think the franchise as a whole has been forgotten here in NZ.
It would however be cool to gather all the NZ and possibly AUS members here on Kanzen and we all have a big Dragon Ball meetup.
I do remember recently when I was watching one of the DBZ movies in my Computing Class in my free time one of my classmates questioned if there was an actual story to DBZ. My Teacher (Best Teacher ever) answered "It's about redemption." or something along those lines.

That's so cool you
r sister is like that. I have one of those sisters who thinks it's "gay" unless you explain that it's all from one dude who just sat at a desk and drew and wrote what came to him. She can at least appreciate that skill. She was one of those who thought it was "lame" and "for little kids", back when I would watch it in the Toonami days. Too bad she knows nothing of the original Japanese version and all it's epicness.
Hmm I see. Must've been interesting.

Wow how interesting. You
r teacher actually said that. Must've been a closet DBZ fan.

These days, almost never. Me and my best friend (the only one from my school years that I see anymore) used to talk about Dragon Ball a lot, but as of late, we've shifted our conversations to other subjects.

About once a week my best friend and I discuss Dragon ball in depth. Heck on Thursday while waiting to see the Avengers we were rewriting GT. But usually we discuss more silly topics such as prophetic Goku or Pirate robots or we get into fights about if 16 has a soul.

It's great having good friends from high school later in life ( I'm only 21, so it's not
that much later..but still cool ). I have two "best" friends in my life,( Both from my High School days ) one is a total liberal, while the other a bit of a conservative. Guess which one is a DBZ fan...

only with my brother. if I talk to anyone else about it they'd probably say ''OMG YOU STILL WATCH CARTOONS?'' and to me, Dragonball isn't just a ''cartoon'' it's my childhood. Goku and rest of the gang are my heroes. Dragonball has taught me to never back down from a fight even when you know the odds of winning are slim. and all different kinds of other examples which I won't go into

that's why I love the community here. because no one laughs at each other because were all sitting in the same boat and honestly I really wouldn't want to discuss Dragonball with people outside of this community because why should I go out and talk with people about it, when I've got plenty of good friends here

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128
Still recording Toonami broadcasts on VHS after all these years!

That's awesome. Rewriting GT?! Hell yea, sounds like fun. I'm envious of that type of buddy who you can discuss such topics with.

When I go to cons I like to bring up DB and have lengthy discussions about the franchise in general. Just recently I was at the Kids Comic Con and spoke to a lot of people (both young and adult) about DB. With the kids, I like to ask them who is their favorite character and why. I get some pretty interesting answers. With the adults, I'm usually the one to bring up topics about the franchise, like for example the upcoming DBZ Kinect game.
When I'm at home I talk to my boyfriend about it. Probably not as much as I do at cons or here on the forum since he's not that big of a fan as I am. But if there's any big news or fun topics that pops up, I like to talk to him about it and he's always willing to listen.

Oni-con 2012 in Galveston, TX. Here I should meet a few DBZ fans that I can converse with.
Watching Dragon Ball Z on Toonami ten+ years ago seems like a dream when thinking back on it today. It really did have a big impression on my young life.

I can talk to 3 of my friends at school about it ,but they are total dub and GT lovers.
(It pisses me off when people only watch it for the fights, I actually like the show not just fights)for example; they hate the GT special because the fights arent HARDCORE.
Also the other dude that I can talk to about actually watches Japanese DB,but he's a total Idiot who tryed to tell me Dragon ball is not 42 volumes long Fucking idiot. he also say's AT had no input on GT whatsoever AAAAHHHHHH stupid.

Right now my 15-year-old nephew is in the process of becoming a DB fan. So I'm talking to him about it quite a lot.
Of course he only really knew about Z so I had to tell him Z was a sub-par sequel and he needed to see the original series first.
He is enjoying it well enough but he keeps asking me when someone will go Super Saiyan.

Sounds like you're trying to convince the wrong person then
And really, you're wrong about Z being a sequel. It's the same thing.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on
my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

^ Me too.
I barely know anyone in real life to talk about Dragon Ball. They are only about four guys only, and I meet them very rarely. And I sometimes talk about it with my two brothers, but they are not interested anymore because of me (I was talking about it too much, and they have gotten bored). I have other subjects to discuss with the rest of my friends, concerning real life. Dragon Ball isn't popular anymore in Greece, though everyone that is 17-18 now was watching Dragon Ball in every weekend morning until about 10 years ago. Good times.
Saiga wrote:And really, you're wrong about Z being a sequel. It's the same thing.
The manga, yes. Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z are two completely separate and different anime though.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. The only real thing that is "separate and different" is the title and marketing.

And as products. The DBZ episode 1 is not DB episode 154. I could be wrong, but I think they don't share the same copyrights. DB, DBZ & DBKai are adaptations of the manga. DBZ is sequel to DB, DBGT is sequel to DB & DBZ, and DBKai is a partial remake of DBZ. They are five different anime/manga series. It's like saying that the movies Iron Man & Iron Man 2 are the same thing, while they are two different movies.
