When did DBZ start using digital animation?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

When did DBZ start using digital animation?

Post by Conan the SSJ » Sun Jul 17, 2005 12:56 am

Exactly what the subject says, when did DBZ start using digital animation? I know DBZ Movies 12 and 13, the 10th anniversary DB movie, and all of GT used it, but when did the actual DBZ episodes start using it? I heard it was sometime in the Buu saga, though I'm not entirly sure. Anyone know?

I don't think it was until the very end of DBZ. It seemed that the last few episodes (after the series shifts ahead about 10 years or so), had different animators, the same ones used for the things you mentioned above like GT. Before that point, I recall it using the same type of animation they had always been using.

All of the DBZ Movies, the DB Anniversary, and DBGT were made using Cels. :)
Just look at my Cel gallery.

Dbz movie 12 had computer animation in it, but the whole thing wasn't made on computers...

It never started using digital animation in the way current anime do, fortunately (digicel animation is "the" suck). Unless you want to count the Budokai game openings. :P

Heh, I would elaborate but I wouldn't know how to explain what I dislike about it. Maybe "the suck" was a bit harsh, but I just don't like it as much as cel animation. Digicel lacks a certain cinematic atmosphere that I miss dearly (among various other things). It's starting to get a little better, though.

I remember in the Kid Buu saga, for just 1 episode, one of the ones where Goku is fighting Buu before he goes Super Saiyan 3 again (i'm being very specific aren't I -_- ) the animation seems to change dramaticly making seem more like Samurai Champloo or Naruto. Goku seems to look a lot more serious (for once) and the way that his fights were displayed was a lot more detailed and wasn't like some of the other fights where all they are doing is looping the same scene in very fast motion.

That's just one of the usual groups who do the "genga" -- The key frame sketches upon which that week's animation is based. The one used in that episode was obviously the best one, which is generally only seen in important episodes (such as that one). The rest of the time, the animation ranges from good, to mediocre, to just plain crap. :)
