The origins of the name DB "Hеrcule"?

Post by dbboxkaifan » Sun Jul 01, 2012 6:56 pm

How did they come up with Hеrcule to replace the name Mr. Satan in the English dub?

Didn't they take the name from the French dub?

Well, what I do know for sure is that, before FUNimation reached that part of the series, they were referring to him on merchandise as "Mr. Savage."

Yea, early merchandise called him "Mr. Savage". But, Gaffer Tape is right. They used the name "Hеrcule" in the French dub so, I guess FUNimation just adopted this name. FUNimation wasn't the ones who came up with the name.

"Mr. Savage" would at least be better than "Hercule".

There were actually figures of the character (the 2 1/2" packs), as well as many other characters no one in America had seen yet, released by Irwin referring to the character as Mr. Savage.

Why didn't they stick to Mr. Savage? At least it still sounded/looked better than Hеrcule.

Hercule is safer for the kids. Savage is cleaner than Satan obviously, but of course even Mr. "Savage" is too brutal for american children too handle...

Wah! :P It get's fixed to (the H-word)?! Not for everybody though...maybe it's the way they type it, though I see no difference compared to the way I did...

Oh the children.

It's kind of fixed, the e in Hеrcule is from the Russian keyboard type so it's seems like it's fixed but it's not.

Probably to avoid any possibility of copyright/etc mess with Randy Savage.

Oh yeah! (Couldn't resist). That's likely it. Funny thing is, a couple of days ago I was watching Heaven's Lost Property Forte and in one ep, a wrestling tournament is going on, and the commentator is voiced by Chris Rager in a voice similar to Mr. Satan's,alongside a girl voiced by Ms. Edwards.

Y'know, that makes me wonder...I wonder if "Hercule" is perhaps the official "Toei-approved alternative name" for Mr. Satan? 'Cause I seem to recall a few other dubs using the name "Hercule" as well. It's not unheard of that licensors will ask the creators to come up with alternative names if the real ones are found objectionable for whatever reason. There's only so much liberty a dubbing company can take without getting approval from the original company.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Those who licensed the French Dragon Ball Z ended up having Mr. Satan as Hercules, Piccolo as Petit Coeur / Satan / Satã and whatnot.

Oh yeah, Vegetto is Vegeku, another example.

Vegeta is Vegeta whereas in the English dub the e in Vegeta is an i so we've got Vejita which is closer to the original name Bejita.

"Beijita," as far as I know, is just how "Vegeta" sounds with a Japanese accent. His real name is Vegeta, referencing the English word "Vegetable," because all Saiyan names reference a vegetable.

The name Hercule never bother me. I guess they pick the name "Hercule" since Mr. Satan is pretty much a joke character and he is suppose to act like some powerful character when he is really not that strong. I guess Funimation wanted his name to be a parody of Hercules?

It doesn't really bother me either. Mainly because one wrong name was the least of the dub's issues by that point. If "Mr.Satan" absolutely had to be censored anything would have done. At least it wasn't changing a name for the sake of changing a name.

I don't see a problem with the name Hercule. I think it fit's the character's appearance quite well and it rolls off the tongue a lot better than "Mis-ter Sa-tan". I guess you could say I'm bias since I grew up watching dubbed but I've honestly just never been a fan of long winded character names.

Hmm. I think they should have went with Sampson in that case. I think there may have been more potential for the irony of his character. Especially when you see him in GT.
