Was GT aimed for a more female audience?

Post by songohan619 » Thu Sep 13, 2012 4:00 am

Of course, I know that it was aimed mostly for boys, but after years of action-packed DBZ, look at GT, or at least, early parts of GT:
There was a new female main character (Pan)
There was more "cutesy" moments (Like Pan in a bumblebee suit)
The theme song was about romance (Bit by bit, I`m falling under your charm)
Goku was transformed to a kid again, something that added to the "cutesy" moments.
There was less action, and more comedy and adventure.
Trunks, a girl favorite, was also included as a main character.

I know that later, some of these changed, but maybe that was because their plan to get the girls to like DB didnt work?
I'm not saying that no girls likes action, this is just a theory.

Hmm I don't know.. I feel like they were just trying to imitate early dragonball.

Yeah, I know, but then again, why would they imitate the original DragonBall?
Not that i don`t like DragonBall, but DBZ was much more popular.
Maybe DragonBall also was much more popular with girls?
Speculation all the way!

It was aimed at the people that liked Dragon Ball.

I enjoyed the series very much and not the type of person who spends time just to find flaws on it.

No, I also think it was aimed at trying to recapture the spirit of the original DB (not Z) hence all the various plot points (some of which, like conveniently having Goku turned into a child, or completely retreading Oolong's arc only with a different guy, feel a bit forced) congregated to try and make GT feel like "DB in Space".

If they had planned on aiming it more towards a female audience, I definitely think they would've had more eye-candy than just Trunks. Character designs would've probably been a little different, and I'm pretty sure the original wish would've been something else that doesn't affect any of the main characters so Goku would still be an adult.
On hiatus.

I don't know whether it really was, but it's worth noting that Aya Matsui, the main writer, is female.

There was a new female main character (Pan)
Who served as a main troublemaker. Of course overshadowed by annoying kid.
There was more "cutesy" moments (Like Pan in a bumblebee suit)
You forgot 14 years old Bra in woman of negotiable virtue's suit
The theme song was about romance (Bit by bit, I`m falling under your charm)
Around that time anime shifted from theme naming songs towards promoting popular pop-hits in openings.
Goku was transformed to a kid again, something that added to the "cutesy" moments.
Because as a girl I want nothing more than kids in reality and TV. And naked Goku in opening was anything but cute.
There was less action, and more comedy and adventure.
Where?
Trunks, a girl favorite, was also included as a main character.
Yes, to became good for nothing metro-sexual in white suit.

The TV ratings would be helpful, but I think that without Toryiama they didn't want to risk. The ending of Boo Saga finished near the own parody. Basically at the moment where hero who started slaying monsters with sword was killing Oh-My-God-And-St-Mary Evil with sworddragonmech. What would be the next, deification? Or maybe shifting back to the roots to start again?

Ps. Did I mention that I hate kids as characters?

There was a new female main character (Pan) My sister and I hated GT-Pan.
There was more "cutesy" moments (Like Pan in a bumblebee suit) I wanted to slap her and scream "STOP THIS F****NG NONSE!".
The theme song was about romance (Bit by bit, I`m falling under your charm) Yeah, a little corny at the start, but it grew on me.
Goku was transformed to a kid again, something that added to the "cutesy" moments. I wanted to choke whoever came up with this. I don't care about Kid Goku, I want Adult Goku... if you know what I mean.
There was less action, and more comedy and adventure. Didn't really like the comedy... they tried too hard.
Trunks, a girl favorite, was also included as a main character. A scarf.... A SCARF. My reaction: "Oh god, he's gay... girls of the world let's weep together"

I know that later, some of these changed, but maybe that was because their plan to get the girls to like DB didnt work?

They wanted more female fanbase? The should have simply show more saiyan booty scenes.

If it was aimed at girls, I think the main cast would be girls.. so Goku and co. are turned into the opposite gender?

If they wanted to aim GT at a female audience, they should've just had a 10 minute-long scene of Gokuu and Vegeta showering together at Capsule Corp. after a "workout".

yes yes yes yes

Naked saiyans... showering... together. YES.

Naked Bardock in the healing tank. Mmmmhh. 8)

Naked Vegeta in the healing tank and naked Vegeta in Goku's mind during the fight with Freeza 8) (I was like "what the-? why is he nude in his mind?... you know what? I don't care.")

Goku in the healing tank was not nude :(... goddammit Goku, you had to be naked for that scene!! But we got the Princess Snake filler and the last scene before the time-skip of him bathing so I guess it's ok. 8)

I wouldn't mind a girl as a main character, in fact I feel Legend of Korra nailed it in an amazing way, but if you want HORDES of teenage fangirls flocking into your series... you just need to give them room for fanfics. I'm not saying plain out fanservice. No no... just leave some things out to the imagination and a lot of tension. A look. A smile. A smirk. This pic:

I mean, that's after they all change clothes RIGHT THERE. I'm sure Bulma secretly hoped they would make out right there, I know I would. LOL

Don't forget Goku naked in front of Pan when he refused to "swim with his clothes on".

I agree with people who told before, that it wasn't. They tried to go to the roots and opening is simply result of new marketing strategy in anime industry.
And I think Pan is thrown in as plot ignitor and to have the cast fresh, from being it three super saiyans with 2 who can form Gotenks and ultra-megagalatic killer Goku.

What Toei tried to do was combine DB's adventure & humor style, and Z's action style. And they failed.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

When talking about TOEI, I stopped watching the Saint Seiya Omega sequel. GT was more fun and hell probably had helluva bigger budget!!!!

Is this the scene from the Intro? I only watched GT once and swore I would never do it again... so I don't exactly remember if they actually used that scene in the anime. If that had happened as Adult-Goku it would have been comedy gold...

Pan... ugh... I simply couldn't stand her. They botched her characters in ways I couldn't believe.

It was used once, but I don't remember when (Pna told it was stupid or something like this).
German version of the opening replaced that soft core child porn with Pan in bumblebee suit. I can't decide what is worse :P

The bee suit. *shudders*

You know, I never minded kid Goku naked, and neither my parents once they watched the series with us. There was really no way to get offended by his innocence.

But back on topic: More male saiyan skin and one or two additional *capable* female fighters might had made a huge difference on attracting more girls the series. I'm not asking they had to be as strong as Goku or Vegeta, around 18's strength level would have sufficed. I always say that GT should have focused on Uub, Pan and Bra. The dynamics would have been simply amazing:

Uub trying his best to become the new Protector of Earth; Pan still somewhat pissed with Uub because he "stole her grandpa" and wondering why Goku didn't choose her instead. Bra taking up training and realizing she's leagues behind the rest and getting pissed because she's supposed to be THE PRINCESS OF ALL SAIYANS. xD

DBZ is like 78% beefcake already, I'm not sure how much more Saiyan skin they could show without going for the full monty.
