That was a great watch, can't wait for parts 2 and 3. Those Super Butoden games look pretty fun.

Looks like part 2 is up! Pretty good video, but I don't understand why he say's Infinite World's gameplay is watered down, in fact, I find that to be quite the opposite. Also, B2's story isn't stupid! :P

I have been watching these and I enjoy them. I always been a fan of Jared since he was apart of hard news on ScrewAttack. I also enjoy his E3 video with Angry Joe not too while ago as well.

It's actually ScrewAttack, with no space. Did you ever watch Nametags? It starred Jared before he started doing Hard News, and it was pretty much Scrubs but in a video game store (never confirmed but strongly hinted at being GameStop), if that sounds interesting to you.

The retrospective was interesting, and made me realize how little I actually knew about the Butoden and other 16 bit games. I'm really curious to try Hyper Dimensions now. I couldn't help noticing that he didn't cover Sagas in part too, though...
This will never not be my sig:
VegettoEX wrote:"Snoop Lion" is just a character he's playing for his reggae album and documentary. Him saying that it's his new name is all part of the character.

I can't believe this is on-topic.

I think he is only doing fighting games only seeing that Sagas was a action adventure game. I'm looking forward to his thoughts on Burst Limit and RB 1-2 soon.

It's as if he didn't actually play any of the games in preparation for the video, did the bare minimum of research, and then just regurgitated information from Wikipedia articles!

I enjoyed the first video because I had almost zero familiarity with the pre-PS2 games, but the second video made it painfully obvious how little effort went into this. He never even mentions things like the developers of each game, Atari changing the Sparking series' name to make it look like the continuation of the Budokai series, the music changes in the Sparking series between the Japanese and international releases (as well as the music change in the Budokai HD Collection), the extra content found in later versions of games (Japanese Budokai 2 and 3, Greatest Hits and Collector's Edition Budokai 3, Japanese Sparking Neo on the Wii), the addition of Japanese voices to later games, and doesn't even seem to be aware of the fact that Bandai is the company that actually produced all of these games, not Atari. Also, though he doesn't explicitly say this, based on the way he worded it he seems to be under the impression that FUNimation got the rights to the series in 1999, and that the earlier seasons were done by Ocean Studios.

It reminds me of that AOL video that basically did the same thing, but they at least mentioned the name change the Sparking series had overseas, and didn't randomly jump around out of chronological order for no reason. (Now that we're done talking about Tenkaichi 3, let's talk about Super DBZ!)

Yeah, I got that vibe too. It was well produced and narrated, just sorely lacking on anything worthwhile for newcomers. I kind of wish this guy was doing this, he's much more competent and professional. He probably actually would have played the games.

Also, I feel he just took the popular opinion of Budokai 2's story mode and just made a joke about it, despite probably never playing it. Budokai 2's story wasn't liked because it didn't follow the story, not because it was poorly designed or anything.

These reviews are great. I wonder if he is going to review almost every DB game? I can't wait for more.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I agree with on RB2 and Super Sonic Warriors 2. SSW2 would have been awesome if they made the gameplay a bit more different. Other then the whole touch screen feature, the game was not much different from the first game. You still have pointless versions of the same character and you can't erase your game data. I still love to see another Super Sonic Warriors game since I loved the first game to death when it first came out in 2004.

He lost me after he said Ultimate Tenkaichi was better than Raging blast 2.

Everyone has their own opinions. I feel like Ultimate Blast had a better single player mode then Raging Blast 2 and Spike was really trying to do something new, but they end up failing.

They weren't even mini-reviews, just descriptions and, indeed, Wikipedia-esque blurbs. Almost no opinion whatsoever.

Definitely worth the watch but there's a distinct lack of personal experience. He's mostly talking out of his ass. Could be have been much better if handled by someone who actually knew what to talk about.

It seems like how most retrospectives on the Internet are now these days.

Well, that's totally fair. A retrospective doesn't have to be a review. I would actually expect a retrospective to be predominantly editorial-free. Perhaps you'd toss in some memories and criticisms here and there, but the general point of a retrospective is to cover the history and chronology, rather than flat-out reviewing the games.

I kinda liked it, though I would prefer a more knowledgeable fan of DBZ than him. I still call bullshit on RB2 being worse then Ultimate Tenkaichi. I still don't get the hype for BT3, its the same as the RB series but faster and has everyone play almost the same and basically repeats supers for everyone. RB series wasn't quite as good, but not far from BT3.

I wouldn't dispute that, it's just that there wasn't a ton of personal color to those rundowns. Not going to make a stink about it, they certainly do what they set out to.

I'm curious how he will cover the RPG's next, I'm hoping he gets more factual on these since I'm extremely unfamiliar with the Dragon Ball RPG's prior to the LOG series.
