Z's Episode 120 Better than Kai?

Post by DragonBalllKaiHD » Fri Nov 30, 2012 11:43 pm

While I listened to the episode #120 of Z dub, it surprised me how good the voice acting was in that episode. Trunks' voice is not as raspy and Freeza has just the right tone for certain scenes, not to mention Linda Young was able to express her character's emotion right. I like it. I wonder why the Kai cast didn't do better than the old dub? Your thoughts?

Still sounds pretty bland to me. I give the old Trunks a better voice, but new Trunks had better delivery. Chris Ayres is unmatched as Freeza, The new King Cold sounds better than the old one. Don't like old Gohan, Yamcha was still a surfer dude back then, Vegeta isn't too bad.

How are we supposed to reply?

In the thread title you ask a question, but in the OP you say the Z dub of that episode is better than the Kai dub like it's a fact. Which, needles to say, is subjective. I personally far prefer the Kai dub, and Chris Ayres as Freeza.

I've never thought Linda Young was a good Freeza. Not ever. She reminded me of when a Mother reads her kids a book and does silly voices for the characters.

Trunks on the other hand, I think did sound better in DBZ. I don't know why they took that direction with him and made him sound more raspy. With that said though, the script in DBZK was far better and even with the raspy voice, I would say the good out weighs the bad in this case.

But comparing a dubbed episode of DBZ to a dubbed episode of DBZK is just... I don't know. DBZK would wins hands down. DBZK has a pretty good English dub. DBZ just has... a dub. To me if you told me you love the old dub because you grew up with it and it's nostalgic to you, I say sure, that makes sense. I totally understand that. But if you told me you love the old dub because it's a great dub... I would think you're insane and wouldn't trust you're opinion on anything after that.

We can't get a perfect line-for-line translation. It's almost impossible. The best we can hope for is that the dub script stays as close to the original story as possible. And that's what DBZK did. There were so many times in DBZ where important story aspects where being laid out, but yet in the dub there were jokes being made or something was being said that had nothing to do with anything. It was just horrible.

I've made comparison clips a while ago to better illustrate my point of how much better the DBZK dub was over DBZ. I guess I'll just leave them here since it's related to what I'm talking about:

Freeza transforming.

Our friends are dead.

Piccolo killed by Nappa.

Chiao-tzu says goodbye.

Not saying the Z dub was better than Kai in general. I'm speaking specifically of that episode. Obviously Chris Ayres' Freeza is far, far better than Linda's, not to mention a better script. The Kai dub is in another world. But the thing is, it doesn't feel right when watching Trunks vs. Freeza in Kai. I guess the whole emotion in the old dub just feels right. Kinda... I dunno... Like you said, the old Trunks was better.

Eh... what am I talking about anyway? I guess it's just me... I guess something is wrong with my brain about that episode.... *ahem* Carry on, guys.

You're totally allowed to like it. Nothing is wrong with you. We're just having some fan banter is all.
