Most realistic and durable Dragon Ball replica you saw?

Post by Angelus » Sat Dec 15, 2012 1:07 am

In the world wide web there's numerous of dragon ball replica balls for sale... but which one have you seen that looked the most realistic in comparison to the anime and made from a very durable material that you have ever seen?

I found these replicas, made by French company Lujex, to be good approximations of the real Dragon Balls, if you can get over the lack of Shen-Long.

Image

The material is fine blown glass such as one might find in average decorations, but with a thick edge that stands up to light wear, dropping, etc. I find this to be one of the most reasonable alternatives to Namekian hard stone, although compared to the genuine material its capcity to stand up to throwing and energy blasts left something to be desired. The stars on this set are inset designs that look decent from a distance, but compared to photos of the real Dragon Balls, you can tell the stars are wide in diameter by at least a full inch, and offset slightly from the center on the six-star ball, which could be a sticking point for those who have owned or seen a real set before.

Most disappointingly, however, is the fact that the set, while it looks great as a display piece, did not allow me to summon Shen-Long as expected. I tried multiple arrangements and even rearranging the words (I believe I tried "Come forth, Shen-Long!", "Arise, Shen-Long!" and "Eternal Dragon, grant my wish") before troubleshooting online and realizing it was not just my set -- this is an issue with the entire line. Needless to say I'm considering a return, although I do stress that these are among the best replicas I've seen. Again, they should be fine for common collectors, those who only like to display on the shelf and rarely use their Dragon Balls, or those who have never seen a real set before and may not be aware of the missing features. For those who are familiar with the real ones, though, these are at best a decent knock-off, as all unlicensed sets I've seen. I guess the search for a truly good reasonably priced alternative continues.

Regardless, 3.5/5. For a display-only replica set, these are the real deal.

But they're too small. XD
Not even Earth DBs were that small, even when held by child Goku's hand.

I myself am looking for a company that'll make DB replicas made of polycarbonate.

Hmmm... is the seam on this invisible?

They can't be made too tough, or how are you supposed to drill a hole in them to wear them on a necklace?

Acrylic/Plexiglass is the toughest ones I saw. You can throw the ball around on concrete and it won't crack or break. If it's rough concrete though, it will eave marks on it, but not chip it. Unfortunately, it's not scratch resistant at all. Stab it with a fork and it'll chip. Slash it with a blade and it will leave a deep mark.

DB replicas made of Acrylic = incredibly impact and break resistant. Very durable. But extremely easy to scratch.

I'd want some made out of orange mineral rocks, like granite.

I've always wanted a set of Dragon Ball replicas, but I could never find a good set. @Cipher all kidding aside, did you really get a set from Lujex and would you recommend them?
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

This video shows the two probably best sets of Dragon Ball replicas I know of. The have the smaller set, and despite not being 1:1 like the others, they are pretty much perfect.

Oh... hmmm.... are those actually crystal though? Like crystal glass? Or is it plastic? Because if it's crystal... it means it's brittle. And do you know where I can buy those?

I own the same ones from the video. I got them from Strapya World. Here's the link:

Hmm, how do I say this without someone replying back with, "That's what she said!"? Screw it, I love these balls! The size is perfect and they have a good weight to them. One of them was dropped before and left a mark, but that's my fault for letting a little kid play with it.

Oh! That's the one I had. Those are made of acrylic/plexiglass. They easily get scratched (permanently). And the stars are too flat and sharp. Unlike the smaller Bandai ones that are fuller/thicker and had lesser sharper edges. The real ones' stars aren't that flat and sharp.
Sigh.. my search goes on. XD

They are hard plastic, like it says in the video and comments. The small ones (that I own) feel like they were sort of a hard resin.

The best places to buy from would be ebay and japanese websites. Sorry that I can't be more specific.

Didn't Spike/Namco Bandai/whoever give away a Four Star Ball to anyone who preordered Ultimate Tenkaichi? And if so, anybody have one?

Those Ultimate Tenkaichi giveaways are made of PVC, and are small ones.

Yes, that resin is made of PVC

Acrylic is much more durable than that.

Unfortunately, those that sell Acrylic DBs have flat sharp stars, not the thick fuller stars.

Does anyone know of a company that would make a custom ball made of acrylic or polycarbonate?
