Dragon Ball things you never want to hear again

Post by Sinestro » Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:23 pm

What are some things you're done with, or tired of hearing/watching?

I'll start it off: I'll be happy if I never hear the term "power level" again, outside of the manga and anime.

Also: The H-word.

The whole SSj2 nonsense in Movie 10 and Radditz is faster then speed of light. I think people know that the speed of light thing was a dub error. I remember in the Ultimate Uncut that they fix that line.

Claims of "DBZ was meant to end at Frieza/Cell."

I'll just kindly point them to a very specific article on the matter hosted here.

Honestly, only one thing comes to mind, and I realize it's probably a bit of a bad thing to mention...but eh, this kind of topic is bound to ruffle some feathers eventually anyway. I mean no bashing by it at any rate.

Anyway, the only thing that this makes me think of is all of the anti-dub sentiments. Yes, the original FUNi dubbed material was bad; yes, they replaced the score; yes, Sabat was playing over half the cast. I get it. I'm not saying it's not worth talking about but...

Okay, let me re-phrase then. I'm not tired of hearing about it really, but I would be happy if I never again heard something along the lines of 'Oh, you watch the dub? And here I thought you were a real Dragon Ball fan.' If someone watches Dragon Ball and enjoys it, they're a fan. Period. This is as inane to me as saying someone's not a Star Wars fan if they enjoyed the prequel trilogy, or someone's not a TMNT fan if they don't enjoy the original comics, and so on and so forth.

I also forgot the whole Majin Piccolo nonsense. This is my reaction when I see a Majin Piccolo related post come up.

I agree with this so much. The same thing with it being meant to end after Piccolo.

What else...

*Vegetto hype
*Complaints about the side characters not getting enough glory
*FUNi bashing/Original version elitism
*Torankusu

Hmm... can't think of anything else right now.

@Hellspawn Oh yeah, that too.

Pretty much any fan-rumour that's passed off as fact is something I never want to hear again.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

After reading what you're all saying, can I not be lynched for tossing this out there?

As I said (or tried to anyway), it's not really that I don't think the dub 'hate' isn't warranted. I just don't like when it's improperly used to make other fans feel bad, is all. Not that it happens a whole lot nowadays though. I almost feel bad bringing it up as often as I seem to, but this time it was prompted by a thread question directly at least. ^_^;

Also, after thinking on it, I guess I'd have to second the "power level" thing as well. Maybe I'm weird, but I don't even care about any arbitrary numbers that can be put anywhere. If I must discuss powers, I prefer to debate more about what we see and can infer rather than trying to figure out what number to slap on something.

When I was younger, that line was pretty epic to me. I got swept up in the emotion of what happened. I never expected Krillin and Piccolo to just go down like that. And then this transformation which I had only seen in pictures on the internet...

Having seen the original source material... not so much. I'm glad I know, and have seen, better.

I totally agree with you on that Vegetto. I too get sick of hearing that dub line repeated, and I believe that they have that as the "article quote" for the Goku page on the DB Wiki or somewhere else on there. At least they had enough decency in the Kai dub to change it to roughly what he says in Japanese.

I also get sick of hearing Power Level. It makes me think that everyone is a robot or something. Of course, when dubbing, the script writers are limited to the flaps (official term for mouth movements of animated characters). And also, no English speaking person says "battle power" in everyday conversation, so something like fighting power or something along those lines would work as well.

I wipe it off the tile, the light is brighter this time, everything is 3D blasphemy.
My eyes are red and gold, the hair is standing straight up, this is not the way I picture me.
I can't control my shakes, how the hell did I get here? Something about this, so very wrong.
I have to laugh out loud, I wish I didn't like this. Is it a dream or a memory?

- About how "gay" the Japanese voices/music/script/language/country itself is
- Power levels after the Freeza arc
- How Funimation "improved" the shows or how the dub is "the same show"
- How Dragon Ball is "kickass" and therefore needed "kickass RAWK" for music
- How the Ocean dub was far superior to Funimation's in-house dub or how Funimation's in-house dub was a huge step up from the Ocean ADR years (both are pretty awful)
- How Sean Schemmel nearly passed out that one time screaming as Goku and how impressed we should all be by it
- Theories regarding when DB was supposed to end/should have ended
- "Akira Toriyama said..." without references
- Anything about Broly
- "Are they still on Namek?"
- "OVER 9000!"

Not that I don't agree with you, but he actually did pass out. It was during the dubbing of GT. Eric Vale apparently passed out at one time too when he was doing a Trunks scream.

- Hate on the dub when people clearly became fans of the series FROM the dub.

That is all.

I might defend the dub. I might defend the Falcouner score. I'm not touching that opening with a ten foot stick. :?

I have to agree with this. It's not even the fact that Funimation reinterpreted Goku's character. I have no issue with that.

The line itself is just so terribly bad and corny and... gyargh...

I was totally embarrassed when Son Goku said ''ally to good, nightmare to you!'' in the Screw Attack Death Battle, I'd linked my older brothers who had always been skeptical of the series and are primarily Marvel/D.C. fans, with only hipster anime experience.
That time your teacher asked you to draw Cell in biology class.
This man is my hero:
To be perfectly honest, I couldn't care less about the fans a re-issue might alienate because if all they're concerned about is being able to scalp the people who were either unaware of the Dragon Boxes or couldn't afford them at the time, they're just leeches and deserve to have their greed backfire on them.
