Are Blue Dragon characters related to Dragon Ball?

Post by dbboxkaifan » Sun Mar 03, 2013 3:47 pm

Akira Toriyama did design them, and perhaps it's why they look familiar, but is there anything more to it than just the design?

- Zola kind of looks like a pirate daughter of Android 18
- Jiro uses a Great Saiyaman-like clothing
- Kluke a modern kid Bulma?
- Marumaru looks like a mix of Yajirobe and Ghurd together

The title's a bit alike too, Blue Dragon and Dragon Ball.

Nope. Moving on...

In all honesty though, I'd say it's rather a case of Toriyama recycling a lot of his trademark design style and clothing whether he realized it or not.
Since they are two totally different worlds I doubt there's anything more than just their similar appearances.

Toriyama had nothing to do with the title of the game series. Toriyama's art is just limited like that. You can find a lot of similar designs if you look at his work.

Is this a sly "All of Toriyama's art looks the same" thread? 'Cause there's no way a Microsoft, and Mistwalker owned property is officially related to Dragon Ball.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Blue Dragon is also an anime series, and manga, I think.

He just like reusing the same character designs. Some of the Dragon Quest characters looked similar to other DBZ characters.

The manga however, looks nothing like the game or anime, which both use Toriyama designs (or Toriyama-ish designs, not sure if he was involved directly with the anime at all).

The manga, 'Blue Dragon RalΩGrad', however, had art by Takeshi Obata, of Death Note fame. And even just going off of the small picture on the ANN page, it's nothing like Toriyama's style at all.

Although there is a second manga apparently listed there, that's more based on the anime or something, but it doesn't show what the art there looks like.

The same can be said about most Dragon Quest characters and how most of them look like Gohan. The one in my avatar looks like Goten.

I actually think the examples you listed above look pretty unique if you compare them to how most Dragon Quest characters look in relation to DB.

This. Chrono Trigger's designs look closer to Dragon Ball as well. I think it's amusing how Lucca looks similar to Bulma and even ended up with the same mechanical genius sidekick archetype. They both invented a time machine too...

I always equated Lucca as looking more like Arale than Bulma myself, though her personality type is much closer to Bulma's.

People always compare Toriyama's older artworks, but his designs have actually gotten more diverse by now:

Image

Apart from maaaaaaaaaybe a Gohan lookalike, a Pan lookalike and a Tenshinhan lookalike, all these characters look different from Dragon Ball characters.

God, Toriyama's recent art-style is amazing, especially with this 3D type of coloring.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

When I was first watching the Piccolo Daimao arc it struck me that Piccolo Daimao looks a tiny bit similar to Nena from Blue Dragon.

Also, when I watched this video of Blue Dragon it was obvious that Norio Wakamoto (Lord Cell) was Nene's voice.

I love Wakamoto's Cell, and hear his vocal on other works is sweet juice.

It's a rather dull game as it adheres to the ideal traditional turn based RPG formula too much for my taste. There are two spinoffs for DS, but I've never played them.

Even though I haven't played it yet, I bought this game the other day because the characters looked Dragonball-ish and I love turn base games. that's what I grew up with and was one of the deciding factors in me buying this game. different folks different strokes :P :D
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

I hope it's better than Dragon Quest, as I'm a great fan of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest is like Final Fantasy without the great story, too much easy difficulty and battle in style of Pokémon.
So, is Blue Dragon better? Because I will buy it then!

There's a pretty good demo for it on Xbox Live Arcade. Let's you play 2 different areas of the game for an hour each.
