General heads-up on the site

Post by VegettoEX » Sat Oct 01, 2005 12:23 am

Hey, everyone.

I don't know how many of you are actually active site readers/fans/visitors, or whatever, but I just wanted to pop-in any say what's going on lately.

In typical Mike fashion, the end of summer turns into major AMV time. Between actually going to the conventions (Otakon and AWA), there's a whole bunch of other stuff. There's the actual making the videos for contest deadlines, and then for AWA, there was a whole slew of other stuff (the Iron Editor competition, mastering a new DVD to pass out, blah blah blah). Basically, that all completely zaps my free time at home.

But AWA is over...!

The big thing that we're working on right now is transferring over to a... *gasp*... real host. That's right, for the first time in nearly eight years since since I began, I'm actually going to be moving the server over to a paid host that's not run by someone I know :P. This will hopefully be within the next week or so. There are many reasons that prompted this, the main one being that I graduated college something like a year ago and I don't have my Rutgers space for much longer :P.

So here's what you can do:

If you're actually using the Rutgers address anywhere (you know, the "www.eden.rutgers.edu/~vegex/" URL), please stop. Anywhere you can, update your links to use the normal daizex.com. Even now, if you want to link to a specific section on the site, you can replace the "www.eden.rutgers.edu/~vegex/" with "www.daizex.com" and it will work properly. Get the word out on any sites or boards you visit. I don't see it being that huge of a problem, but getting other people to fix their broken links is always harder than fixing your own ^_~.

Beyond that, Julian's got some stuff nearing completion, and I've always got a bazillion things that are consistently 98% done that I could get back to... haha. If you can tear me away from video games... >.>

That's about it.

Whenever I go to the main page of the site, I'm getting a pop-up ad for SoftwareOnline.com now. Is this something that's supposed to be there, or did you not know about this? Or maybe I have spyware...but it's only on this site, so I dunno...

Hey Mike, I don't know if you've decided on a web-host yet, but regardless, I'll just say that I Need Hosting (http://www.ineedhosting.net/) is an excellent one, and has fair prices for their services.
I myself use them, and if for nothing else, I thought I'd just mention them so you might have another option.

That's impossible. I haven't changed anything, and the site's hosted on University space... there's absolutely no advertising, be it in the coding, on the server, etc.

I'd definitely suggest running a scan immediately.

I would just like to add that I experience the exact same thing as DBW. :?

Huh. Just tested it in IE, and noticed the same thing (been using Firefox). Greatly concerned, now.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with NedStat or eXtreme Tracking, now, instead of the site itself... which definitely isn't it... I know NedStat went through some massive changes, recently. I wish I had known about this sooner! ^^;;

It happened for me a while back (maybe a month) but it went away. At the time I did a Spyware/Adware search and I think i did a virus scan just incase (at the same time my computer was running extremely slow) but none of them found anything, it just sort of went away.

Yeah, I don't get it every time, it seems to be random. Anyways, I'm happy to know that others are experiencing this too, and it's not spyware (I mean, I'm *not* happy that it's happening to other people, but...you know what I mean).

Progress:

I've updated the DNS numbers on the domain so it's pointing to the new host. Some people (such as myself) are already getting it on the new host. Some aren't, and are getting a generic Network Solutions "under construction" page.

If you're visiting the site and get the new server: Hurray, you're all set!

If you're visiting the site and getting a Network Solutions page: Within the next 24-48 hours, you should be fine.

If you're getting the old server: Stop visiting the site via the Rutgers address :P.

I haven't done anything about that pop-up yet. I just tried going to the new host in IE, but I didn't get a pop-up. Is anyone else still experiencing that problem? Let me know. Thanks!

I tested it with IE and got one popup, but I couldn't tell if it was the one DBW informed us about, due to that Google toolbar. :P

I reloaded the page and opened new windows of IE and did not get any recurrences, apart from that first test in IE.

I'm sure most home users are Firefox lovers and if they visit the site while at school or their workplace; the anti-popup software in place would almost always disable it. Taking this into account, I don't think it's a problem really. Hope that helps! :P

EDIT: Visiting the site first in Firefox, the browser let me know it blocked a popup window... Reloading it didn't produce any popups, seems as if it only happens the first time visiting in a while?

EDIT #2 I took a screenie of the popup. http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/7582 ... ing3mi.gif

Yeah. :?

Yeah, I'm a Firefox guy, and since I just have its notifications about popups turned off, I never even see them. It's good to know, though, that it wasn't suddenly Eden/Rutgers placing popups on their sites. Now I'm convinced it's one of my two reporting trackers. Once I figure out which one it is, I'll just can it :P.

I'll put two bucks on Nedstat / Webstats4U or whatever they're calling themselves now. Stupid names. Assuming it's one of them.

Did you ever need two? I suppose it's nice to have, but do both have features that the other does not? Seems like a hassle to me.

Also, does Webstats have a harsher policy on what you do to their tracker image? And do you even care? I think I remember eXtreme saying you can't shrink their logo when I signed up to put their tracker on a now-dead site, a few years back.

I got some similar crap, a few months ago.

A large bar where the tracker image was supposed to be had appeared. It was a large ad, similar to the type google uses. After a quick page refresh it was gone though.

I wouldn't use NedStat, or ExtremeTracker for anything. ServuStats is far better in my opinion. 8)

I'm still getting that pop-up if anyone's interested...

I just got one myself. If I need my registry "scanned," I'll visit infectmypc.com, thank you. EX, I'm sure you'll do the honorable thing.

I'll try and get rid of it, tonight ^^;;. I just haven't had the time to play with the site in any depth, the last couple of days. LONG WEEKEND!

EDIT: Is anyone still getting the pop-up? I'm assuming it was NedStat that was causing problems (since they're the only ones that have significantly changed in the same time period as the pop-up began). I've gotten kinda used to the eXtreme tracking's stuff, so if I can keep it, I want to :P. It's nothing significant, especially since I actually have access to the raw server logs, but eh...
