Why was Budokai 3 never released for GameCube?

Post by ShadowDude112 » Mon Mar 25, 2013 3:26 pm

So, having recently rebought Budokai 2 for GameCube, it's brought up a question I've always wondered for a long time. Why was Budokai 3 never released for GameCube? What made it so different so that it couldn't be released. It always bugged me since Budokai 3 was fun and I had to get a PS2 if I wanted to play it. Was it contracts or something?

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

I don't remember anything ever being said about it at the time. If I had to guess, it was likely sales figures on Gamecube versus what the PS2 version was pulling in, and specifically internationally (outside Japan, that is). Likely wasn't worth the extra effort, plus diminishing third-party support for the Gamecube overall as time went on.

Budokai 2 on the Gamecube most likely didn't sell well. By 2005, I think enough people had a PS2 since most people had a PS2 as their main console.

PlayStation 2: 155 million units sold
Nintendo Gamecube: 21 million units sold

There's your reason.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Yeah, the Gamecube was one of Nintendo's biggest failures. I guess sooner or later they realised it wasn't worth it.

They're comitting the same mistake with Wii U, and their marketing's are pretty bad either people think it's an add-on for Wii, "what's a Wii U?" or they compare Wii U to Wii, instead of Xbox 360 or PS3.

Nintendo needs to make Wii U shine on E3 2013 with announcements that benefit the console and its audience, or some kind of miracle.

By the way, if Budokai 3 had been released on NGC, it would've been graphically better than PS2's version.

It have also might have been that with the way the GCN controller was setup it would've a bitch to go into Hyper Mode, only having two trigger (L & R) buttons didn't help either. Could just be me since I have fairly small hands but I've found Gamecube games that force you to press all four buttons tend to be aggravating.

Fair point but I think in general the controller really just doesn't work well for fighting games (probably also the reason when they re-released Marvel Vs Capcom 2 in 2002 they only did it on the PS2 and Xbox), I remember having a hell of time as a kid getting through the Budokai story scene where you have to charge Piccolo's ki, the C stick and control stick are too far apart to really work effectively there. Hell, I don't think I passed it til I played HD collection on my PS3.

The original PS and PS2 sold better then the N64 and Gamecube, but the Wii sold better then the PS3. Funny how the world works sometimes  .

Well, there is sense to why that is but we don't want to get to off topic here!

That's pretty much it. Even though I love the little purple lunchbox, porting this wouldn't have been viable.

Best game on the Game Cube is Super smash bros. Melee. That may be why the console sold in the first place.(wii u needs Smash bros. now!)

But anyhow, I always thought it was weird that Budoukai was released for Game Cube, Though I did buy that version for the cel-shaded look.

I think the first Budokai game was added on the Gamecube for the people who didn't own a PS2 at the time. I personally think Dimps should have put game on both consoles, but the Budokai games were one of the reasons why I bought a PS2 in the first place.

Tou got that right. I got a review copy of Capcom vs Snk 2 and it's a nightmare to controll. At least Capcom knew this and mapped the special attacks to the C-stick but needless to say I'd much rather play fighting games on a snes/psx style controller.

I've just realized, back in the days, there was no-one in my neighborhood, nor my relatives and family, who had Game Cube!
Only time I saw the console anywhere was in the Game store, hooked on TV, to try it out and kids were playing it a lot, but nobody actually had it.
Everyone had Play Station 2 from that gen era. Lot's of friends also had N64, but nobody had GC.....
I've just realised how poor this console was. So it's a miracle it even had Budokai 2.

It also had Dragon Ball Z Sagas, but not really a good DBZ game.

Edit: Battle Stadium D.O.N also, this is one heck of an awesome brawler!

Oh really, I thought Battle Stadium DON was PS2 exclusive.... Yeah, fun game, but after you play it few times and notice how impossible the unlocking is..... I felt it was such a letdown later!

It was one of their weakest consoles, but hardly a failure. You make it sound like it was among the Game Boy Micro and Virtual Boy.

In terms of software it was weak, but definitely had great hardware potential and Wii's like GameCube except it has motion control and newer games, plus tons of unwanted shovelware crap.

NGC, Xbox and DC were better than PS2, but PS2 had many more games and great than NGC/Xbox/DC.

That is slightly incomprehensible there, dbboxkaifan.

Every console is wonderful to someone who liked it for what it was and found the games they wanted for it.

Case in point: me and Virtual Boy (Galactic Pinball, dawg). So yeah. Let's try to keep the conversation appropriate and more factual, please.
