Why do Toei never include subtitles in their releases?

Post by KaaN10 » Thu Mar 28, 2013 3:45 pm

Just had a random thought about this.

If they included English subtitles in their Dragon Box (DB/DBZ/DBGT/Movies) releases back in 2003-2005, the fans who watch the Japanese version with English subtitles would've bought Toei's releases.

If they did that they could've told Funimation to not include Japanese audio and subtitles in their releases, hence the Japanese version with subs only being available via Toei's products.

They would've had a whole new market.

Toei already makes a lot of money off of Funimation's releases.

What about Spanish subtitles? French subtitles? Italian subtitles?

Japanese people speak Japanese, and the Japanese DVDs were for Japanese people. Toei is far more interested in licensing out their properties and having them localized and then getting residuals off of that rather than doing any extra work themselves.

I've always been annoyed that Toei doesn't seem to even include *Japanese* subtitles on their releases. I mean, I wouldn't expect a Japanese release to have English subtitles (though some do), but c'mon, have some consideration for the members of your audience who are deaf or hard of hearing.

If anything, it should at least have Japanese subtitles because you know.. They're Japanese.

For English subtitles = FUNimation US releases.
