Question: Why does SSJs Roar?

Has anyone else ever noticed in the original Japanese version of the series that whenever someone is charging up or yelling while in SSJ form a roar can be heard in the background? What exactly causes this? Has it ever been explained?

I actually like the effect and think it is kind of a let down that Funi's version doesn't make use of it.

The SSJ 3 transformation does.

My guess is that it has something to be with "The Beast Within"...aka, the Oozaru.

The Rule of Cool. Also, it's the roaring of their primal heart.

That's always what I associated it with.

Although, in Goku's first SSJ transformation, there's no audible "roar" that I can hear. His final scream before he transforms was done by Hideyuki Hori, which gave it a somewhat beastly feel since his voice was deeper than Nozawa's, but I couldn't hear a strict "roar."

Interestingly, the "roaring" sound effect that happens when Gohan goes SSJ2 was not present in any other dub. Which means that Toei probably distributed audio materials to dubbing companies that, for whatever reason, didn't have that sound effect....rather odd.

It's quite clearly Nozawa pitched down. It sounds nothing like Hideyuki Hori. I have no idea where this rumor, which I've seen perpetuated throughout the years originated from.

He's not listed as Goku in the credits, as listed in the Kanzenshuu episode guide.

I've noticed it for a while, yeah.. and I find it lame that the same people who love that roar and call it part of DB then make fun of the jaguar sound when Goku punches Vegeta in Ocean Dub

If they use any of the Ōzaru scream for the transformation, then there's the potential that at least some of it is Hidenori Arai screaming into a metal drum.

I always loved that roar but I think it appears whenever the characters are screaming, not just in SSj...

You know, about Goku's SSJ scream, that's a great question to ask Nozawa at animazement.
