Curtis Hoffman?

Post by Eclipse » Sun Oct 09, 2005 10:02 pm

Ok, this is a noobie question that is definately gonna be bashed at. I just got the 42 manga set, translated by dbzsubbed. In each volume, they contain a summary by a guy named Curtis H.Hoffman.

Also, it also seemed he did Dragon Ball GT episode summaries (check Dragon Ball Arena). I know this is a stupid question, but who is this guy basically??

Daimao might be a better guy to explain, but I'll do my best. I've been doing DBZ stuff online since 1998. Curtis was around well before I was.

Basically, he did manga summaries (and the DBGT episode summaries) long before anyone ever thought about doing them. The DBGT episode summaries he did came out right after the episodes aired in Japan (or shortly there-after... they weren't years later, or anything). I believe his site was named Three Steps Over the Edgep (last URL I found was http://home1.gte.net/curtish/, which obviously doesn't work anymore). He's one of those guys that did a shitload of stuff for the online community, disappeared, and is still being ripped off over a decade later :D.

A good bunch of his material was later incorporated into toriyama.org, which was run by Wuken (Sherwin), Daimao (Steve), Carddass (Rob), and TheDuck (Brian).

Being a total asshat and continuing to prove that nothing you say on the internet will ever go away, here's his biography page from back in 1999 via Archive.org.

And for the record, we *really* have a problem with the bootlegging of licensed merchandise, here.

Ahh....this makes a hell of a lot of sense now. If anyone can explain more, please do so.

Eh, all right, I'll stop mentioning the illegal manga translation. Interestingly enough, they also contained a message along with the summaries stating the majority of the scan was translated by PlanetNamek (dead now), and a few bits was translated by dbzsubbed.

That's about as good an explanation as I could have given. His summaries were the de facto guide to the Dragon World for many years, dating back at least to '93, probably earlier. (He also introduced some of his own views and quirky translations that came to be considered gospel for a long while, including the nickname "Kushami" for Lunch's alter-ego. EX has known me long enough to know how that pushed my buttons for a while :) .) He was good enough to donate his materials to the Akira Toriyama Super Database, which was the heart of Toriyama.org.

Did the internet even exist in 93? I thought it was just AOL and BBS type stuff then. How'ed he get his info across?

Heh.

Usenet news has been around for a long, long while, and he posted his summaries on rec.arts.anime (before it split) and rec.arts.manga. They are probably archived at Google groups (as are a bunch of posts from me from the time, probably). EX is right, it never goes away. And it doesn't help out how old this is making me feel.

Hey, the older, the wiser. We all love you to death, Steve, and the DB community wouldn't be the same without you.

Okay, now that the mushy stuff's out of the way :) ...

Yeah, I remember Curtis Hoffman's old reviews, and the references to violent Lunch as "Kushami"... it still cracks me up. And as for Toriyama.org, I think I only encountered it once before it was shut down, and that was a long while ago. It's a shame... I understand it had a ton of info on DB, Dr. Slump, and the like.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Thanks for the info guys. I was planning to check some of his stuff at an archived Toriyama.org, but sadly, robots.txt has made archiving impossible....-_-

But thanks anyhow

Wow, people were using "Ultra Super Saiyan" back in 1993?
Also, in one of his summaries, he said he knew the guy who coined the term "Z Senshi."

Uhh... the narrator in the show? I hear "zetto senshi" more than enough.

I wonder whatever happened to that fellow. Interesting bloke.

I actually sent a mail Mr. Hoffman a year or two ago and got a response. It was kind of like getting an e-mail from Yoda.

That's crazy. I doubt many people would get the AMV reference, but that would be like talking with Kevin Caldwell. And hey, maybe someday, people will say the same thing about us when they email us and get a response :P.

You mean they don't? I was tempted to write a comment for your editorial about how odd it was back in the day that people considered the bigger sites' webmasters to be "Elite". Mr.E from PN was so bombarded with e-mails from newer sites wanting to interview him that he interviewed himself and made it a subsection of the FAQ!

I thought you'd be getting all that recognition these days since there's only pretty much four sites worth going to now, of which only yours and Meri's were around from the start.

Although falling into terrible anecdotes, apparently people have gone to Drew because they know I go there. I would never want to meet those kinds of fans.

Getting stopped in a mall for an autograph was definitely something that was really cute though.

Sorry for a bit of offtopic, but I have a fast question - what are the other two?
It's party time, Ginyu style!

Now that I think of it: none.

Lovely Cyborg and Bardock's Spacepod, but they're chara-shrines and you can only do so much with a shrine. I only visit daizex daily. Apart those four sites and Kanzentai, I can't even think of any site worth looking at, let alone come back to.
