I'm sure I am not the only one that thinks this, but to you, is Kai unoriginal? I'm wondering if the English language versions of DBZ influenced Toei. First, we had the original dub, the Saban/Ocean/FUNi dub, or whatever it's considered, back in the 90s. Huge portions of episodes were cut out. Refer to Chris Psaros' DBZ Uncensored for what I mean on that. Yes, it wasn't to the same degree as Kai was, and maybe not the same idea, but it was a similar result. Now, Kai came out in 2009. I don't know how long it was in the planning stages, however. In 2008, DBZ Abridged by Team Four Star came out. It, like Kai, was a shortened version of DBZ, designed to go through the story at a much faster pace, only this one was a humorous take. But, I wonder if Toei took a look at these, or at least one of them, and just thought, "There is an idea here. Let's trim some of the fat and release it to make money, in time for the 20th anniversary." Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Yet, both examples I mentioned, in a way, shorten the series, or change the pacing. Yes, for different purposes. At the very least, I find it hard to believe that they are unaware of the original dub's cuts, or Abridged. It just seemed like they were taking cues from what had been done, and giving it an "official" spin.
Agree/disagree?

That might have something to do with it. But I think it was more Toei trying to find a way to squeeze out more money from the franchise by doing a remake--without all the work of doing a remake. Newly animated OP and EDs, new music (or at least there was supposed to be), remastered footage with some digital enhancements, and to really grab people's attention--make it "filler-free" and faster paced. Those examples you gave might have served some inspirational role in the process, but I think they were probably planning something in the works before that.
Another example, 4K!Ds One Piece. They cut out a whopping forty episodes worth of material.
One Piece Kai? Someday, maybe. Thing is, when it's all said and done, the short version of One Piece will be five hundred episodes. lol
