Is Goku's "choking on food" tactic viable?

Post by GS7X7 » Mon May 20, 2013 1:14 pm

I remember several times in anime characters (including Goku) would eat a lot, have food stuck in his throat, then he'd down a ton of liquid and start pounding his chest til the food went down.
)
Is this a viable tactic to when you've good food stuck, or if you're choking? Or is this just guaranteed to make things worse?

Um, I'm no health expert, but I would not take something from DB (or any other anime/manga/fantasy for that matter) as a proper health precaution. Keep in mind this is the same person who trained under a massive gravitational pull, repeatedly blasting himself with ki attacks, taking incredible damage, to make himself stronger. Goku, as a character, is not really much of a role model, or example to follow for everyday life.

Last time I choke on a steak thinking I could've eaten it without cutting to too many small pieces I learnt my lesson to not do it again, because I almost passed out (or worse) from that due to not being able to breath. Sure as hell won't choke on food or anything that could hazard my health.

He's an alien, so his physiology is different. Injuring his body makes it stronger.

It's not just Goku....

It's been years since I saw it but, I seem to recall Beet from Beet the Vandel Buster doing it too.

Not sure how many other anime characters do it...

If someone were to "down lot of liquid then start pounding their chest" then what would be the science behind what would happen to them?

Anime characters also bleed through their nose when they have a perverted thought, I wouldn't apply anime logic to real life.

At least he's not shouting out how his food tastes like a certain main protagonist who dumps all available condiments onto his food...

"Downing a lot of liquid" is somewhat viable, using the weight of the liquid to force the blockage down.

Are you referring to Toriko? He seems to offer commentary on every last bite he eats, lol.

I wouldn't take any health tips from an anime or manga...

Yeah, drinking water (or any sort of liquid) can help if you've got something stuck in your throat. I thought that was just common sense.

Actually, sports mangas/anime often offer some good health tips.

If you have a large piece of food that's having trouble going down your esophagus, it could help.

It's not going to help you if you're actually choking on something because it's lodged in your windpipe.

This is a yes and no question because it all depends on the situation, if a small enough piece of food get stuck in your throat, drinking water or any liquid can and most of the time will help, however if the piece of food is too big you're pretty much screwed and will have to perform the heimlich maneuver instead.
If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out. ;).

While I have admittedly not been here very long, I must say that this is the strangest topic that I've seen on this forum :D

I tend to stand up when I'm choking. Don't know if that helps or not; I just do it instinctively.

I've heard that putting your arms up helps. It has something to do with air flow.
