Kaio and Goku: An attempt at adapting the JP voices

Post by KingofWisdom » Wed Jun 12, 2013 2:37 am

Okay, so I thought I'd try my hand at doing an adaptation of the original Japanese voices for Kaio-sama and Goku. The scene comes from film three, so I used the uncut Ocean dub script as a guide (since it's fairly accurate), with a few tweaks here and there. It's not a very long scene (just over a minute), but I hope someone will appreciate it. :D

The music track comes from the Battle of Gods OST. Okay, so the seiyu might be legendary, but I like a challenge! So, what do you guys think?

In fact, if you want to quickly create a popular image, simply over saturate the colors and increase the contrast. While you may not achieve a sophisticated image, you will achieve an image that will please a less demanding audience." - Alain Briot

Goku's voice was very well adapted, there were a few awkward deliveries but that may actually work here. It's odd but cool to see a voice type like it in English. I had a similar idea for a Kai fandub, but no one really auditioned for it on VAA. So I gave up on trying to find someone.

Kaio's is pretty good as well, I'm familiar with Mugen's work so I was expecting him to do well, still not a 100% match on the voice type (pitch is about right, tone is different). But, much better than what we have gotten from the official English dubs.

Keep up the good work, the mixing was natural. Hope to see more from you guys!

I can't say it works. Goku's voice is cringe-worthy IMO. Only MasakoX has made a good case for an English child Goku in his adult body.

Yeah Like Masako X's take on Goku, better than a flat out 8 year old voice. I know he's young at heart....but damn. I think the Kaio was on point however, pretty good.

The great thing about Nozawa is that even though she is clearly a woman, she can convince you she's playing a man by making the voice deeper and more mature. Sadly, your fandub version of Goku feels like you're having him played by a woman just for the sake of having him played by a woman; he really DOES sound like a girl in your dub. I hope you don't take that too harshly, though. I'm sure your actress could pull it off if she put more effort into sounding older and more mature by deepening the voice, much like Nozawa's performance. For an English dub example, Maile Flanagan (like Junko Takeuchi) gives Naruto a deeper, older sounding voice for Shippuden Naruto as opposed to her younger-sounding portrayal of Young Naruto. Colleen Clinkenbeard is good at this as well; just look at her Luffy. In fact, I think Clinkenbeard's Luffy voice would be a good fit for adult Goku, especially since they're such similar characters. Maybe her performance would be a good one to draw inspiration from? Then again, I'm no expert on voice acting, so what I'm saying may be of no help whatsoever. I like Kaio-sama's voice, though.

As much as I like Clinkenbeard (she's a good Gohan), I did not want to go in that direction. Bringing up Luffy again, it's like she's trying to sound like a seventeen year old by going as gruff as possible, when I feel that it defeats the purpose (because the seiyu goes with a more prepubescent voice, even after the time-skip, and if Oda wanted Luffy to sound his age, he would have gotten a male actor). Not only that, but guys don't sound like that (her Luffy is even rougher than Nadolny's Gohan, though Clinkenbeard is a far better actress). Or, to quote another, "gruff woman trying to be a boy" voice. I can see that maybe I went too far in the other direction, but there really is a fine line to walk with this. I appreciate the feedback, though.

I find that there aren't many circumstances where VAA is useful to me. Unless a series has buzz, you're lucky to get even a few auditions. Whereas something popular will get 30+ auditions, and you never really know how things will play out. Instead, I listen to people's demo reels and ask them if they're interested in whatever I'm doing.

I've pretty much picked that up at this point, I'll just have to cast the same way did. I'm sure if I didn't state 'Female Only' a lot of guys would've auditioned. But, what I was going for was the Nozawa-esque voice.
