Thoughts on DBZ Movie 9

Discuss Bojack Unbound. For some reason, I don't like all that much, but it's alright.

This movie is really well-animated, but totally unnecessary. It's just another instance for Gohan to show off SSJ2?

Regardless, I like Vegeta's entrance a lot!

The Trunks/Tien fight at the start appealed to my inner fanboy and I thought that, amongst a plethora of cripplingly unoriginal Dragonball Z film villains (which are usually loosely tied to the main-plot), Bojack isn't so bad and unbearable - even if perhaps relatively more-than-usually two dimensional for a Dragonball villain.

So, Movie 9.
Bojack was cool; I like the pirate-esque design. And this movie marks the return of villainish henchmen! And good ones at that! And it has more SSJ2 Kid Gohan, which is always welcome. Aside from an unnecessary Goku appearance at the end, which really ruins the movie for me, this is one of my favorites.
I give it a B+.

To this day, I don't understand why people give Goku showing up at the end that much crap. It never bothered me nearly as much as it seems to bother everyone else.

As far as the movie as a whole goes: I love it. It's in my Top 5 favorite movies. Some fantastic (and unique) fights, wonderful locations, nasty villains, and some of the best music the series has seen. Not to mention, the power-up scene for Gohan is pretty spectacular in every regard.

Plot - B+. Bojack and his gang was nice bad guys. Great backstory and nice idea with King Kai planet sealing them. Before TFS said anything I always thought the reason why King Kai had better gravity was because of Bojack. Till I learned...well NVM. Gohan had good development in this movie. Vegeta did as well as it shows His worried-ness for Trunks and it adds on to the fact he stopped fighting.

Animation - B+. Nice animation here. Nice colors and does the dark atmosphere BETTER than what Tree of Might pulled out of their asses. Every thing was detailed and nice to look at.

Music - A+. BEST MOVIE OST EVER.

Fighting - B. The fighting brought something called power isn't everything. The henchmen used great special attacks to beat up the Z fighters. I do wished the transformations was more explained even in the guide books. Also want to see Zangya transfor....OFF TOPIC. Gohan kicking Bojack arse was awesome at the end.

Overall this is a GREAT movie. I place it 3rd of the list of best DBZ movies.

This is my second favorite. Loved original villain designs with conncetion to the main story, the whole tournament idea and fights showing all of the characters.
Loved the music and idea of Gohan having his father's colours, before it was introduced in the main story!!!
I liked everything about this movie, and it's second favorite to the Movie 5 for me, only because of Cooler.
This movie is not part of my personal canon, I consider it official after Cell Games!
FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat: Funky_Strudel
PS5: Dynamixx88
Trust me, I'm millenial and a designer.

Movie 9 is probably my favorite movie other than 13. The main reason for that being the set pieces. The environments are absolutely phenomenal, and the animation, as with most of the movies, is great. Bojack is an interesting villain, which was greatly needed given just how boring and one-dimensional Broli was. Also, the tournament was a very interesting idea, and I thought it was well-executed. There's also more SSJ2 kid Gohan, which as others have said, is great. It's very derivative of the Cell arc though, with Bojack's henchmen being comparable to Cell Jrs, hurting Gohan's loved ones and driving him over the edge. Overall, I would give it a 4/5.

Not bad!!

I like the alien pirates idea.

Would have been more interesting if Bojack was more powerful ( at Super Perfect Cell level ).

I would joke that Goku killed Bojack when he punched a hole through King Kai's planet when fighting Bills.

It's my favorite of the original 13 Dragon Ball Z films. It does everything a "DBZ" movie should be: give the heroes a challenging romp for 50 minutes. While it doesn't break any grounds, it just just nails every department. The animation, fights and look. And as a Gohan fan, it's always welcomed to have an extra story where he's the hero. I also like how it could fit in the timeline. It makes it feel a little more important for some reason.

It's average in terms of DBZ films for me. It falls in the mid category, along with Movie 5, Movie 6, Movie 11, and Movie 4. It's definitely not up there with the big boys: Movies 1 and 12.

Pros:
*TEAMWORK AND TACTICS WORK! The henchmen are able to take down Gohan, a stupidly powerful opponent, with unique techniques and numbers, and later aid each other in taking down the Z fighters by doing things like splitting them up, sneak attacking, and paralyzing them. I cannot overstate how much I like seeing something other than power actually be effective; it's one of my favorite parts of the DBZ films in general. The manga really needed more of this.
*The henchmen were cool, for the above reasons. I was so happy when I saw that these henchmen could actually be a relevant help their boss, and not just die like jobbers to make the minor characters look cool ('cept Kogu, who did exactly that).
*The characters aren't COMPLETE copy pastes from their Cell Games selves, especially Vegeta.
*Like Movie 5 and Movie 13 (maybe Movie 1 too), it can fit in the timeline with little trouble.
*Gohan killing everyone was pretty cool.
*It continues the proud tradition of Vegeta getting ass-stomped by the bad guy.

Cons:
*No one but Gohan got to accomplish anything. Except Future Trunks, but I outlined above why I thought that it was bad. Oh wait, Piccolo saved Gohan. So he got to accomplish something. No one else though. Nope.
*...okay, I have to say it: Goku did not need to be in this movie. His appearance is the epitome of everything wrong with Toei Goku. Base Goku easily flooring a Perfect Cell level enemy with one punch, Gohan not accomplishing shit unless Goku actually does everything, Goku violating the laws of the afterlife because lolgoku... just dreadful.
*Bojack himself is rather bland and boring. He doesn't even have a motivation- well, he's an expy of Cell, so it's kind of appropriate I guess... but he doesn't even have any of Cell's actually cool elements.
*The final fight, while cool, was still an anticlimax, just like Movies 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, and 13 (wow, long list...). Again, the sucky final battle mirrors the Cell Games, but that's not something they should striving to mirror...

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

What's not to love about this movie? It's my favorite hands down. It's just so creatively well done from animation to story.

I've watched this movie so many times and I can't ever seem to get tired of it.

Trunks and Tien fighting was like  Two of my favorites actually fighting each other. Gohan in his father's clothes, heck everyone looked pretty good. Even Mr. Satan.

Some of you are drunk and need to go home. DBZ Movie 9 is the best one.

You have a great set up in this tournament thrown by a rich guy with its high tech equipment and detailed battle environments. Cell Games era (post Cell Games but before timeskip) Gohan is the lead. There's a lot of great action, like Trunks vs Gokua. There's plenty of comedy in Mr. Satan's situation. Some impressive production values for a DBZ feature. Some of Kikuchi's finest scoring. SSJ2 Gohan saves the day. It's a very fun, exciting, memorable movie.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

I really, really like Movie 9. It looks great, from start to finish. It shows the gang post-Goku, moving on which they don't often do thanks to time skips or it being taken for granted that he's returning, even though only Gohan and Vegeta seem to be particularly affected. The humans help out, and aren't brushed off as useless, they're just outclassed because everyone is blindsided by this sudden attack.

Plus, I just love the Tenshinhan/Trunks fight. It satisfies the fanboy in me that knows Tenshinhan is bloody strong, and makes the Saiyans seem less... overpowered. even if Trunks was (as is likely) holding back, he escalated it by transforming, which I just don't see why he needed too if he didn't think Tenshinhan was actually a good opponent.

I feel like most movies go through the motions of just rehashing an earlier storyline with a 'new' villain that evokes the old one, whereas this one tried to do something different that fit in to the main story and I appreciate it. Except for that bizarre green Roided-Chrono henchman. Always took me out of the movie.

One of the best movies, some really beautiful animation, good fights, good plot...yeah.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Bojack & co. weren't sealed inside Kaio's planet. They were sealed in a planet far in the end of the galaxy, and when Kaio died, the seal broke.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.
