Was GT overly criticized?

Post by dbzfan7 » Sat Aug 24, 2013 11:23 pm

I'm definitely on the bandwagon that GT isn't good. But when I separate it from DB/Z and let it stand on it's own right, it's not nearly as bad. It's possibly even decent. I'm not one of those guys who overly hates on GT or even Evolution (still a bad movie), but I think it may be decent if you didn't compare it to the previous iterations. Hell I'll take watching GT over shit like Sonic X any day

If you go to youtube they act like GT is the plague and the ones who enjoy it are demonized for it.

Stand alone - DBGT is 6/10 IMO. Compared to most anime I'll say 7.5/10 to be honest. There is a lot of shitty anime that people fail to mention.

As a sequel - 3/10. Lets be fair. Even if DBGT was good people would bash it. I mean you got DragonBALL and DBZ to live up too. That;s hard enough. But you got to just as good if not better.

GT had some amazing things going for it that still hold up well. Its the execution that was handled poorly. Overusing the Dragonballs? Great idea. Having a Tuffle villain hellbent on revenge for his race? Also excellent. Super Saiyan 4? Perhaps GT's crowning achievement.

Yes. I can't get the impression out of my head that many just hate it because they don't want to be ostracized and therefore simply follow the herd, especially on the internet. That's not to say criticism toward it isn't valid. If people don't like it, I guess they have their reasons and that's perfectly fine.

Oh yes, it definitely was. I don't think people realize how bad it COULD have been. Yeah it's not great and it definitely deserves criticism, but not as much as people have been giving it over the years. The reason people despise GT is because it takes good ideas and doesn't flesh them out.

And because as Infernal Vegito said, many just say they hate it because they are too insecure to stand out and voice their real opinions. That type of BS happens with a lot more things than GT. Bandwagoning is utterly ridiculous.

IMO, DBGT has the same problems of the Star Wars prequels. Good story but so bad executed.

I personally dislike DBGT a lot. I don't even consider DBGT as canon in my head-canon.The same for Star Wars prequels.

Seeing that I've been apart of the DB Internet fandom for the past 12 years, I would say no. Even GT as it's own show, the show has bad writing, unfunny humor and the inconsistency of the animation was bad. I think GT gets a lot of hate because it was highly anticipated and a lot of fans had high hopes for it. GT had a new SSj form, villains coming back to life, evil Dragons, the return of #17 and Goku becoming a kid again. All of that sounds awesome and it failed to deliver. Other DB stuff like Episode of Bardock and DBE never had any hype behind them since DBE was going to flop anyways and Episode of Bardock was just a shitty manga spin off/OVA.

Ok, GT being non canon in your opinion is fine, but the Star Wars prequels :| ? They are established canon. You cannot disregard them because you dislike them .

Anything with high expectations that ends up being a big letdown is going to be hated by fans no matter what. Why do think fans hated the AVP movies, the Star Wars prequels, Superman Returns, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Last Airbender, X-Men 3, Spider-Man 3, Batman & Robin, Iron Man 2, Terminator Salvation and Godzilla (1998)? They had a lot of hype and fans were looking forward to see them then they end up being a huge letdown. GT may have nostalgia to other people, but fans will still dislike it. GT ended nearly 16 years ago and I see people still hating on it.

This.

I think GT has more good than bad. Pretty much each fandom I've come across have some hated aspect that are hated just because they are hated or because popularity crap. I like Alien 3 as much as Aliens for example. I enjoy Jaws 3-D and Jaws: The Revenge- these I do think are weak movies but they're better than shark movies of nowadays IMO. Now, GT, does have it's fair share of problems however as a whole I think GT is good and I'd even go so far to say the last few episodes are what I'd call great.
I think GT gets a lot of hate because it was highly anticipated and a lot of fans had high hopes for it. See hype is opinion/personal based too. I remember back in 2009, some people trying to have hopes Evolution would be good in it's own way. I had hopes it would be a Street Fighter ala a so bad it's good movie, but it wasn't. Where's for me the hype you mentioned about GT lived up to what I had read about in magazines in 2002-2003, SSJ4 was awesome, Evil Dragons- awesome, however the villians coming back to life was disappointing as is nowadays Goku being a child again. 17's return wasn't bad. The humour was alright, the writing was mixed, but the animation being inconsistent is a huge thing I DISAGREE with. I think most people just don't like the animation. It's actually very consistent. You'll get 1 badly animated episode but then 4 incredible ones. I think I counted 49 out of the 64 episodes were of a very high quality.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

I still enjoy GT. If you dont watch it with such a critical view its actually rather enjoyable. Undeniably flawed, but enjoyable. As I said before there are some great concepts and ideas floating around in there, its just how they were handled thats the issue. If they redid GT, ironed out the strength inconsistencies, removed the plotholes, and followed the manga canon more I'm sure it would have been MUCH better received.

I think GT has more whacked out logic/strength issues than plot-holes.

Still issues that could be fixed relatively easily if given the time and effort.

It's a terrible followup to the manga. However, as non-canonical filler, it's not that bad.

The only really good thing about it was the concept of the Shadow Dragons.

The animation gets too much hate, the noses aren't that bad and the glossy style looks great and was ahead of it's time. Visually GT has aged much better.

They could also have gone a long way in smoothing it over if they took more time and effort in situating it, removed some of the more poorly conceived elements, and avoiding the stale reuse of elements.

by situating it, i mean tie it into the existing series better, make more links to existing canon, and their own movies:
>For instance, have more references to World Trade Organisation when they go back into space. Wouldn't it be cool to have said that the machine mutant's empire and WTO had actually been at war/a stand still for a long time - the reason WTO kept expanding was to pour more resources into this war, and frieza wanted immortality not just so he could live forever, but so he could defeat and conquer this rival empire, and finally attain full galactic domination.
A bunch of tertiary characters/villains in the Black star DB aga could have had ties to WTO, or hell even still been splinter-factions.

>and Bebi, well actually, gonna make a new thread since what i was gonna say got kinda long.

Either way, some neat ideas, some bad ideas, generally bad execution, but i suspect it may have been the staleness of it all that was one of the biggest nails in it's coffin. It suffers 'movie syndrome' in that it's just recycling elements, the only difference is movies are one off, while they tried to make this a series.
