Female Dragon Ball fans
We know that majority of the Dragonball fanbase consists of men.
But women also love the show. Maybe about one seventh of the fans are female.
So, ladies!
Can you tell how you got into the franchise and what did your friends first think of it?

Weren't most of the people who saw Battle of Gods in Japan female? I heard there were a lot of groups of girls in their teens and twenties there.

Re: Female Dragon Ball fans
Dragonball's popularity & fanbase is undeniable.
I maybe wrong, but perhaps "Z" has far less female fanbase as opposed to its prequel.
Reason being that original Dragonball's family/crowd-pleaser. Just like Inuyasha.
Likeable characters, genuine sense of humor & action & adventure cleverly infused into 1 show.
Z's dramatic change of scale/pace with sparse humor (Frieza~Cell Arc) is kinda hard to say.
DBZ's sci-fic geared with hardcore action has gradually built its own market/fanbase which sustains over 20 years.

I don't think you're wrong in thinking that females generally prefer the earlier parts of the series, but you are incorrect in saying that Dragon Ball is a prequel to Dragon Ball Z.Vijay wrote:I maybe wrong, but perhaps "Z" has far less female fanbase as opposed to its prequel.
Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

Re: Female Dragon Ball fans
I got into DBZ because one of my cousins showed it to me on a bootleg VHS. I wasn't impressed, in fact I wanted to watch Sailor Moon instead. But, a year later I think, I gave the show another shot and started watching my cousins bootlegs (with extremely poor subs) and I slowly started to like it. Then when it aired on toonami, I became super addicted to the show.
My friends where mostly male and they loved the show as much as I did. I had a couple of female friends who liked the show too, mostly because Vegeta and Trunks, but they weren't as crazy obsessed with it as I was.
Long story short, I draw porn of it now.

Re: Female Dragon Ball fans
Seriously,I think there are quite a few female dbz fans, don't underestimate us!
I have to admit I had trouble getting into the series at first, because it seemed so boring to me (the first episode of DBZ and onward) and it just didn't make any lasting impression on me. I remember King Kai's dub voice made me want to cut my ears off...but because there wasn't anything else of interest on tv and Cartoon Network was basically my background radio I couldn't help but follow the show, and I eventually grew to like and love it!
My best friends and several cousins were also fans, so I knew plenty of girls to discuss the show with at that time.
Alas, that was several years ago, at the height of DBZ's popularity, so nowadays I'm stuck fangirling alone on the internet...
But I am a bigger Dragon ball fan than my boyfriend (who is only familiar with the dub), so it's fun to correct him on stuff and keep him updated on the latest news.
People act surprised when they find out I'm still into Dragon ball after all these years because I don't 'fit' their image of 'nerdy anime-loving' girl I guess. Most of the time I get positive reactions but there was this one guy who really looked down on me for it, so that's why I don't flaunt my love for Dragon Ball.

It's the same with me and bf. He's only familiar with the old Funi dub and sometimes her gets a little confused when he hears about new DB related news.VyeRo wrote:But I am a bigger Dragon ball fan than my boyfriend (who is only familiar with the dub), so it's fun to correct him on stuff and keep him updated on the latest news.![]()
I tend to get an attitude problem when people look down on me for loving cartoons or anime (unless I tell them I'm an artist). I don't fit the ideal "anime-nerd-girl" persona either. But that has never stopped me from displaying my love of DB or anything else I like. I don't run around with DB shirts or anything or proudly boast about it when no one asks. But I don't tend to keep anything I like a secret, doesn't matter what other people might think. Hey, they don't like it, ain't my problem.People act surprised when they find out I'm still into Dragon ball after all these years because I don't 'fit' their image of 'nerdy anime-loving' girl I guess. Re: Female Dragon Ball fans
Speaking for my fiance (since she doesn't have an account), she originally thought of Dragon Ball as kind of a joke and wasn't even the least bit interested in it. But we made a deal; I'd watch one of her shows with her and she'd watch one of mine with me. I can't remember now because this was way back in the first few months of our dating, but I think I agreed to watch Teen Wolf and I decided to get her into Dragon Ball with Dragon Ball Z Kai. I figured the abbreviated nature of it would keep her interest longer than all the filler in the original series.
Long story short (too late, I'm sure), she ended up loving Kai. Unfortunately, she has no interest in the original show because she just doesn't want to sit through over 500 episodes. I guess I don't really blame her because that does sound a little overwhelming. She also refuses to watch it in anything not in English, again something I understand. I'm the same way; I prefer to watch my shows & movies, not read them. And the final nail in the coffin for her is how "censored" and "kiddie" the original dub is, which is the only option with her.
With that being said, I know it sounds like she's not that interested but she is. We have long and in depth conversations about the characters. She loves asking questions about motivations, back-stories, and the like. She's also really excited about the Buu Saga coming to Kai.

How about Dragon Ball (not Z)? That has pretty good pacing and a decent dubTravis Touchdown wrote:Speaking for my fiance (since she doesn't have an account), she originally thought of Dragon Ball as kind of a joke and wasn't even the least bit interested in it. It's not like I hide it either, but I don't boast about it like you said. Sometimes I would draw characters from DB in my notebook and people in my class would notice and give nice feedback. I also have a Dragon Ball background on my phone and people just don't seem to expect that on *my* phone.Scarz wrote:I tend to get an attitude problem when people look down on me for loving cartoons or anime (unless I tell them I'm an artist). Re: Female Dragon Ball fans
From what I've encountered, DB fangirls were usually weird and fugly. My girlfriend loved DB for some time, but than she got annoyed by it and doesn't like it that much nowadays, because she is pretty.
Pretty girls usually don't watch Dragon Ball, so I don't know if there are any....

The only one of my meatspace friends who is a fan of Dragon Ball is a girl, neither of us know anyone else who likes it so we kind of have to stick together.
She's not a fan of the pre-Z era, though, and has yet to see the Boo arc.

I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

So your girlfriend doesn't like DB anymore because she's pretty? How does that work? Because the two are not mutually exclusive.

Anyway I know/knew plenty of girls (online as well) who are into DB and are pretty, you're just looking in the wrong places.
