If you are from Toei, what should you do in DB anniversary?

Post by Linnom » Mon Sep 30, 2013 7:28 pm

2014 will be a special year for Dragon Ball, will be the aniversary of 30 years of the manga, Toei probably will make many things to comemorate and of course make big money with this special date, i can see thing like new games, Blue-rays boxes and some others things.
If i was a director from Toei i would make a new series to celebrate this event, like Kai, this anime will be a remake of the original series, but this time the story will start in the Pilaf arc and will end with Buu, just like the manga, i will change some aspects of the series with the objective of improve this already awesome anime, this new remake will feature:
-Fully redrawned scenes in cutting edge HD.
-200 episodes with minimum filler possible.
-Most homogenal art possible, the entire series will follow the Battle of God art style.
-The Kai cast of voice actors will be recast.
-The storyline will be almost identical to the original manga, but i will change some aspects, i will add more references of the future arcs since the beggining, like more signs of Goku Saiyajin heritage (zenkai, per example.), Maki Gero will appear in Red Ribbon arc, Freeza will be mencioned in Saiyajin arc, and some others changes.
-The fights will be almost identical to the original manga, but i will improve some aspects like more refined and specifics martial arts moves, specially in the later arcs. I will ask the Toriyama permission to add new minions in every arc, like more Piccolo Daimao Mazokus for everyone fight.
-More detailed background story for every character, i will ask Toriyama permission to add new flashbacks to show things like Yamcha and Pual backstory, The training off Tenshinhan with Tsuro and Taopaipai, Yajirobe past (I always wanted to know that!), Kami Sama training to become a god, more Freeza flashback with saiyajins (loved the flasback fillers in the original anime) and some others scenes.
- Soundtrack is a difficult part, because what i want is impossible now, but if there a chance, i will recast Kikuchi to make a new soundtrack for the remake, i'm a absurd fan of this work, my idea of this new soundtrack is a mix if new songs and remix of old musics, Makafushigi and Cha-la will be back too!
-Battle powers is another difficult aspect, i will try to revise some inconsistence of them, like some skyrocket zenkais in Namekusei saga and the confusion with Buus power level. I won't drop the power level medition in Boo and Cell sagas, the androids will use the same medition of Freeza empire.

I know this is just a dream and will never hapening, but a remake with any of this ideas whould be a gift for all hardcore fans like us, and a lucrative new anime for Toei.
And you? My fellow Kazenshuu friend, do you think this my idea would be a good remake for our beloved series? If you was from Toei, what should you do?

Remaster the entire series with its OAR/4:3 at 1080p for Blu-ray.

But with the original sheets will be very difficult to improve the quality.

Make a Saiyan OVA or a background story.

Remaking the show seems pointless now since we just got Kai. I'll wait for another decade or two to remake the anime again. For the 30th anniversary, I would do a new movie or a new series that takes place after DBZ and ignores GT. I would have AT be the producer of the show and help write the script.

Another movie with continued Toriyama input, but a bigger budget that is also well utilized.
On hiatus.

BOG took a while for it make back it's budget. Maybe they will do a smaller movie this time.

Battle of Gods didn't cost thirty million dollars. It's budget, while not officially stated, is quite evidently non-existent. Television episodes of Bleach and Naruto have better animation than Battle of Gods and those are made on $100,000-300,000 an episode. It's hard to see Battle of Gods costing even $3,000,000 USD with the production values it showed.

Didn't they receive that $600,000 grant? Wouldn't it at least be that? But, yeah. Toei being on the cheap doesn't surprise me, makes sense. Spend a little make back a lot, 30,000,000 for Japan a bit over 36,000,000 for Mexico (if I remember the number from that article in the BoG thread correctly) and that's not even the rest of Latino countries. That's not even counting the Home Releases and no (North) American release. Plus, Brazil is getting the movie. It easily made back its budget over 10+ fold. There's still potential for it to make more money the more it'll make. Its Korean numbers didn't seem to be great and I don't know how well it did in the other Asian countries.

I know neither would happen but

1. Reanimate the entire series. Not Battle of Gods or Ultimate Tenkaichi cutscene quality, but along the lines of Budokai 2 and 3 opening quality.

2. Give GT a FMA Brotherhood makeover. Redo it from scratch, uplift the story and tell it so that it follows manga canon, consistent character strength, etc. Articles like GT Redux on here show its clear the fans know what we want in a sequel to Z. Toriyama wouldent need to be involved provided everything is done right.

A remaster is unlikely given that to do so is expensive and they've already remastered and restored the material for Kai in the recent past (or if the Kai Buu saga is definitely happening, they're continuing to do it.)

We'll probably get one or more of the following three things:

A) A special episode - maybe in the form of another Dream 9 crossover or something.
B) Another Movie - although that seems unlikely, given that the time frame on these things usually means that, if it's supposed to be released by the anniversary, it would already be in production.
C) Some form of collectors edition re-release. The Dragon Boxes are old news now, we're due another collectors set.

I'm going to vote C, with a possibility of A too.

A movie based on chapter 1 to chapter 23 of the manga, drawn in Toriyama's original style, so it looks like the original coloured pages of the manga coming to life or something awesome like that!

This! (you forgot about specials and movies :D) I would also like to see something like "Dragon Box: The Music" ~10CD box set with entire Kikuchi score.

I'd like to see something like the 10th anniversary movie (Saikyou No Michi/Path to Power) but with a DBZ storyline. It wouldn't have to portray the series exactly (the 10th anniversary movie blended several concepts and omitted others) as long as it got certain universally loved classic bits given proper homage.

If I couldn't have that, then I'd like to see a newly-animated "clip show" where the series is given an extensive overview and classic beloved moments are covered. Sort of like the anime cutscenes in Ultimate Blast, but much more extensive in what's covered and connected through narration.

I mostly say this because one day we won't be able to upscale DBZ any further without it still looking like ass in whatever our current viewing resolution is. I'd like to at least keep the classic moments around a little longer.

I still haven't seen Battle of Gods, so that's disappointing to hear.

Yeah, that lowers the chance of an HD remastered DBZ release, but they can release the original DB or GT on Blu-ray first. GT especially needs an upgraded release because they still have the original audio masters.

If I'm Toei, I do nothing, because I'm too concerned with other properties to care about the anniversary of a show that isn't a cash cow anymore.

Id actually like to see the Goku VS Freeza and King Cold fight from Future Trunk's timeline. We know he would handle Freeza with relative ease but against Freeza AND his father would have made for a interesting battle.

Given how easily Trunks dispatched of them, I'd say it would be a short fight.

They could be working on a movie as we speak. I think we should hear something by early next year.
