The Adventures Of An iTunes & Amazon Newbie...

Post by MagicBox » Mon Oct 14, 2013 11:22 am

I guess I'll start by saying that I hope this doesn't come off as a rant to anybody. That's not my intent.

So, I'm really not much of a "digital distribution" guy. I bought my first MP3 from Amazon a few months ago, and I only bought my first iTunes song yesterday. As you can see, I'm pretty new to this. I'd just rather have CDs. With Dragon Ball, though, importing can be pretty costly. Those shipping fees add up, so I don't mind taking the cheap route for certain albums that I don't much care for. Take the 2005 versions of "Mystical Adventure!" and "HEAD-CHA-LA," for instance. I just don't enjoy them enough to set aside $30+ to import those discs. Luckily, they're on the iTunes and Amazon MP3 stores. Lower quality than a physical CD release, but good enough for songs that I'm really only buying so that I can wave around my "completist" badge.

My first digital purchase was the Inazuma Challenger CD, which I really enjoyed. After re-listening to the iTunes episode of the podcast, I decided to buy a few more things. I prefer Amazon's store if I can help it, but I'll reluctantly buy from iTunes if it's my only choice.

First up? The aforementioned 2005 singles. I started off with "Mystical Adventure!" on Amazon's MP3 store. Strangely, the previews for the first seven songs were from the 2005 "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" single. I assumed it was just a little preview glitch, so I went ahead and bought the album. I now owned the "HEAD-CHA-LA" single and the final two tracks from the "Mystical Adventure!" single. Wow, I'm glad I bought this one first! Basically, do not buy this album. Both the iTunes and Amazon versions contain the wrong songs. If you want to buy the correct version of the single, it looks like iTunes is your only option for now. Here's the link to the correct version.

At this point, I was beginning to get a bit of a headache. I now had the Amazon version of the "HEAD-CHA-LA" single (by accident) and the iTunes version of "Mystical Adventure!" (the only version that's not messed up). To top it off, the "HEAD-CHA-LA" single sounds inferior to my other purchases (both in sound quality and directionality), so I don't know if the songs themselves are just that lackluster or if I got a badly encoded version when I bought that messed up album. Maybe I'm just paranoid? Either way, that's two out of three digital DB purchases that I wasn't fully satisfied with. So now I'm kind of hesitant about moving forward.

Again, I don't mean for this to be a rant. I'm just kind of sharing for the sake of sharing. Has anyone else experienced any frustrations with getting digital DB stuff? I noticed that there are a ton of Kageyama live albums on iTunes. Are there any problems I should know of before buying? Does anybody have any stories similar to mine?

I think in terms of DragonBall music, having the singles for purchase on iTunes is great (cheaper and you don't have to pay out the ass for 3-4 songs)... When it comes to a larger library of music, I still prefer to have the physical collection of music, since those tend to be worth the money IMO.

I wish more DBZ music was on iTunes... even the Kai stuff would be welcome!
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
