Dragonball Z Chess Magazine

Post by AlexFili » Thu Oct 31, 2013 1:58 pm

Just wanted to share a random bit of Dragonball merchandise with everyone.
Like many others I've got Z franchise gear like videogames, action figures and a board game.
But today I was wondering if anyone has seen these before.

When I was on holiday in Greece, I spotted some issues of what appeared to be a Dragonball Z Chess magazine, I only bought one or two of the issues but from what I gathered they each featured a different figurine (mine had Android 18), with the idea that when you had all the issues you'd have a full chess set. There were even special issues that had VHS tapes with presumably Chess tactics and clips from the show.

Has anyone ever encountered these before? If not, what are your thoughts?

I remember these! I was collecting them as a kid and I was playing chess with my brother before getting all the pieces... and when I got them all, I never played it again... :shifty:

Each issue was a magazine that was teaching you chess & various tactics, it had one small figure (which was part of the chess), and one page that had the biography of a character. Unfortunately, I threw it all away years ago...
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

When did you buy it? This collection is pretty old and rare.

You know, DBZ action is very much like a well played game of chess...

... interrupted by a small child who swings his arm and knocks all the pieces off the board and places his action figures on it and yells "PEW PEW PEW YOU'RE DEAD NOW, FREEZA!"
Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. The victim of violent head trauma as an infant [...] he's a simple bumpkin with a fair share of brain damage who's natural talents to work out what's wrong compensate for his broad lack of common sense. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Wow those pieces are the oddest selections...original buu is a pawn and Number 18 is Son Goku's queen...interesting :|

Now it has me imagining different dbz 'chess teams' XD

>like babidi = king, (fat)buu = queen, dabura & majin vegeta = rook, puipui & yakon = bishop, yamu and spopovich as knights, majin goons as pawns.
>not quite sure on king(Kold? first form frieza?), True-form Frieza = queen, dodria & zarbon = bishop, jiece & burter = knight, ginyu & recoome = rook, pawns = guldo, cui, appule and the rest of the grunts
>Gero = king, Perfect Cell = queen, 17 & 18 = bishop, 16 & semi-perfect Cell = rook, 19 & Imperfect Cell = knight

:P

Edit: looking at the pic, they seem a bit... arbitrary? princess snake, jiece on a bike, kid buu as pawns? well i guess people who are looking to have dbz characters as chess pieces are probably more into the gimmick of it al anyway, and find them neat simply because it's 'goku and those other dudes'.
