A lot of anime has them; why not Dragonball?

Probably because there were sometimes two movies a year. I think it's a lot easier (and cheaper!) these days due to the rise of digital animation. Back when they were animating episodes on a weekly basis *and* working on movies at the same time, there just didn't leave a whole lot of room for OVAs.

Oh, I noticed. When I correct thread titles, I tend to do a batch all at once. Just haven't done it yet today.

Unless it was already corrected, maybe they think you should have written "Why was there no OVA?"

It was written "Why is their no OVA?". It has been correctly changed to "Why is there no OVA?".

OVA = Original Video Animation. Basicly, it's a direct to video animated movie. Since all of DBZs movies were theatrical releases (and the specials were aired on TV) there were no OVAs.

<Xyex> Original Freeza never sounded like a chick to me.
<Kaboom> Neither does Rita
<Xyex> Good point.

An "OVA" (original video animation) or "OAV" (original animation video) [the terms are interchangeable] is best described as something that's *not* produced for television or theaters, but has a high budget.

The reason these things came into being was due to the onslaught of VCRs, and consumer desire to obtain things directly on video (as opposed to watching on television, or waiting for things in theaters to get their home release).

For an American comparison, think of direct-to-video Disney movies like the 2nd and 3rd Aladdin movies. They have a nice budget, but weren't played in theaters, weren't made for television, and came out right on home video.

Oh, I always thought OAV was Original Anime Video...Anyway, I can understand why DBZ didn't have one, I mean two movies a year, gosh! An OVA is what something like GT deserved.
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.
