How will the internet respond to two Wikis?

Post by Tyro » Sat Nov 09, 2013 3:02 pm

Kanzenshuu will be one of the first communities I know to have two competing Wikis on the internet. How do you think people on all sides will react? Have there been other communities that you guys have been a part of where there are two similar databases? Does one eventually die out; could Kanzenshuu eventually replace the current Wiki? How will other online Dragon Ball communities be affected?

There were two Kingdom Hearts wikis, that are now in the process of (or they might be done already, I dunno) merging. Hopefully that wouldn't happen to us when the wiki is set up.

I imagine that the current wiki will remain the bastion of ignorance and misinformation that it is (and unfortunately, it will most likely be the one that new fans see first), while Kanzenshuu's would be a smaller, but much more accurate and professional one.

There are tons of other communities which have two wikis or more. I don't think it's that rare. Stargate has GateWorld and a Stargate Wikia, Chrono Trigger has the Chrono Compendium and a Chrono Wikia, etc. In those cases, it's generally obvious to sensible people which is the definitive source and which is either an abandoned, outdated mess or just a mindless pool of random s***.

There has also been a small trend of communities spliting off from Wikia due to a disatisfaction with Wikia Inc.'s constant changes and for-profit orientation. For instance, the Kingdom Hearts series has the original Kingdom Hearts Wikia and then KHWiki.net which split off from it. These split cases are generally just confusing for everyone.

It's not like it's going to have anything that Kanzenshuu won't have. I think it will be totally replaced unless there's call for a completely English dub-based Wiki.

I think it's too well established to just die off. It may become irrelevant (if it isn't already), but I don't think it's going anywhere.

Wikias can't never be "replaced", because their very nature is to be an open place that anyone can edit. As a result, there will always be random people editing the DB Wikia. It's not like Wikia Inc. will suddenly close it or anything.

Tons of people still reference it like gospel on other boards. I think the public might be so happy with a properly kept information network that they'd give up immediately on the original Wiki, honestly. But it will be up to us to reference it to get it started.

There's two Digimon wikis since one of them goes by the dub and the other one is more faithful to the Japanese version. I think the DB wiki will likely be around since more casual people will use it. The Kanzesnhuu wiki is more for the hardcore fans like us that care about the source material. I have a feeling the DB wiki will call us "weaboos" because we don't go by the Funi dub.

There is more than one DBZ wiki already. Many other series has more than two wiki(s) in fact. So I imagine people will click the first wiki they see. So sadly since DBZ wiki been around longer most people will either go to that one or just see the name and website(DBZ wiki is orange. Don't know how Kanzenshuu wiki would look like) and stay on there. I can picture people on Youtube bashing Kanzenshuu's wiki because it's not DBZ wiki they're used to and say fans made the Kanzenshuu Wiki and posted lies. While their DBZ wiki(The popular one) will be their place for facts.

"Uh, your wiki has a typo. You typed 8000 by mistake."

Make it an "encyclopedia." That way the corpulent wiki-workers won't be attracted to it like maggots to (one of) Yamucha's corpse(s).
A YouTube channel with no AMVs on it? I know, it's hard to believe.

Halo has Halo Nation and Halopedia, Halopedia is far far more organised, prettier, consistent, and accurate, but Halo Nation always comes up first on Google which is highly annoying. That will be the case with this, but maybe enough fans from this website and visitors will catch on to our ideal, most authoritative Dragon Ball resource and convert.

There's two Dark Souls wikis, the better one (Wikidot) is even written on the back of the case of the game now, the other one looks fancy, but is sometimes less useful. There's a wikia too I think, I've never used it.

The Kanzenshuu Wiki should have a page about why DB Wiki sucks so much, lol.

I'd prefer for us to be self-evidently better by the quality of our work. It's distasteful to simply thumb our noses.

A good idea to spread awareness of the Kanzenshuu wiki would be to cite it as a translation source (not as a PRIMARY source but as a translation of primary sources) in Db-related articles on Wikipedia.

I was joking (wasn't too obvious, sorry), such info wouldn't really "fit" the wiki anyway.

Kanzenshuu doesn't fall under Wikipedia's guidelines for reliable sources, so that would be a rather bad idea.

That's why I said as translation of sources and not as sources. Citing a Japanese reliable source and then putting a link to an English translation of it next to it (in one footnote, not two) is generally tolerated.

So I guess consensus is that we're going to have to tolerate a really lame wiki and constantly tell people "Don't trust that one"?

What does "not tolerate" them mean? It's not like we can nuke their site or anything.
