I don't know what it is about this particular scene, but everytime I watch it it creeps the hell out of me.
Am I the only one or does anyone else feel the same?

One World.

No, but I thought the art style looked a tad American in that shot when I was a kid for some reason.

Is this a shot from Kai?

It always looked funny to me.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

That particular shot appears to be from a bootleg digisub of
Kai (time in the corner, yellow font, widescreen), but it was also a shot in the original version of
DBZ, as well.
And yeah, that one shot always felt very different from pretty much anything else in the entire series.

Oh, okay. I agree though, that shot does look pretty weird.

Goku's hair looks so realistic, how it's sprawled everywhere.
I guess it is kinda spooky but dang his ear is huge

This creeps me out too. Didn't they cut this out from Nicktoons' edit of Z Kai?

From what I remember, they had a few of these super-detailed pictures. There was one in the end of one episode where Goku rushes with his Kaio-ken and it becomes a still, with it being drawn detailed.
I think that it was in the end of the episode where Goku rushes to fight Vegeta or Nappa.
The mentioned picture in this thread doesn't creep me out. Goku looks peaceful.

To answer the topic's question.....
Now I am. It's really weird how seeing that still frame creeps me out but seeing it in motion didn't.

Isn't this type of detail common for a hero death?

Don't know why but I like it. They used this style in a few episodes, for example during the Goku vs. Vegeta (Saiyan arc) fight where it was at the end of an episode where Gohan and Kuririn were trying to finish Vegeta off, and at the end of the episode before Goku fights Cell, during a still of Goku stepping onto the Cell Games' arena.

Lots of anime from back in the day (not sure about these days) had a few high-detailed shots.
Thing is, this one looks different stylistically from the rest.

the shot never creeped me or anything, but I was never crazy about the style in which Goku was drawn. I don't know why, he always seemed a bit a off model to me.

It's his head/hair. I just stared at it and it seems to wild even for Goku. Resembles more or less of Mufassa's hair from Lion King more than Goku.

I never thought it was really creepy, but it does kinda look weird.
Also noting that his left eyebrow is still up and other down... Looks like he's just sleeping. He's supposed to be dead, what the frig.

That shot did use to creep me out as a kid upon first watching the uncut Spanish dub on Telemundo back in 1999. I don't remember it being present in the English dub of the time, which was the heavily sanitized one by Saban.
