Akira Toriyama's art education

Post by SuperSaiyanOzaru » Mon Nov 25, 2013 5:39 pm

What was Akira Toriyama's art education? Did he ever go to art school, or was he self-taught? Are there any samples of his life drawings floating around? What about drawings that aren't in his usual style? I've always been curious about his art education.

He's largely self-taught, having grown up drawing things long after his friends abandoned their doodling for other pursuits. He went to a technical high school to study design, then was hired by an agency that did graphic design for advertising. He quit after a few years, though, because he disliked the monotony and the early mornings. He only entered that Jump manga contest because he was broke.

I don't know about his drawings of other things, but there is a clear progression in his work from very posed, precise, almost still-life panels, to a more fluid and streamlined style that he progressively adopted, reaching its zenith in Dragon Ball. It took a while for him to hone a sense of motion in his art, and doing so was one of his stated goals with DB.
